Ultraviolet

Milla Jovovich, Cameron Bright, William Fichter

Directed by Kurn Wimmer

Rated PG-13

In the future, thousands have been infected with a man-made blood disease that causes its victims, the Hemophages, to have preternatural abilities, speed and the ability to see in the dark, not to mention the vampire-like canines.

It also seems to affect speech, because, in the future, everyone talks like Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Violet (Jovovich) is a Hemophage who is the basic bad-ass rebel character, doing things her own way. The movie begins with her infiltrating a human government facility to steal a top-secret weapon. The weapon turns out to be a little boy named Six (Bright) who is dying from whatever they’ve infected him with. Surely you realize that Violet is going to pretend not to care about the boy, only to find that she loves him like a son and will do whatever she has to (especially take down the entire government army because she’s just that bad) to save his life.

This script whips from one clich’ to the next without explanations or apologies. Jovovich’s dialogue is full of phrases such as ’Kill them,’ and ’You’re all gonna die,’ which are meant to slam the audience in the face, yet leave everyone squirming uncomfortably in their seats.

Although, the cinematography, costumes and settings are fairly well done, this film seems to be another victim of the recent trend to spend too many resources on visuals, and practically none on script and dialogue.
