Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

Will Ferrell, David Koechner, Sacha Baron Cohen, John C. Reilly, Michael Clark Duncan
Directed by Adam McKay
Rated PG-13

In Talladega Nights, Ferrell plays his usual moron-with-a-heart-of-gold as a race car driver named Ricky Bobby. Ricky, the son of a runaway, renegade father, grows up with a simple value system; “drive fast” and “if you’re not first, you’re last.” Working on a NASCAR pit crew, he gets the chance to drive when the crew’s driver gives up mid race. He quickly becomes a NASCAR hero, although the crew owner, Larry Dennit Jr. (Greg Germann) regards him as a stupid cowboy. In order to steal his thunder, Junior hires a homosexual French driver to the crew hoping he will beat Ricky.

Co-written by Ferrell and Saturday Night Live peer Adam Mckay (Anchorman: the Legend of Ron Burgundy), the plot is formulaic and many of the gags wear out before they’re finished. Over-the-top reactions are something of a Ferrell specialty that have lost luster.

The best decision made was in casting Reilly (Dark Water, The Aviator) as Ricky’s best-friend Cal Naughton Jr. Cal is Ricky’s underappreciated right hand man who is similarly afflicted with stupidity. They are basically the same character, yet Naughton outshines Ferrell rather than supports him. His delivery of practically the same jokes comes off with more sincerity and, therefore, his dialogue is much funnier.

On the other hand, perhaps the worst decision made was also in casting. Ricky’s French race car rival, Jean Girard is played by Sacha Baron Cohen, an English man in life who is probably most popularly known as the talk-show personality Ali G. Although Cohen’s antics usually make for great, belly busting comedy, his imitation French leaves much to be desired.

Another SNL alumni, Molly Shannon (Superstar, Scary Movie 4), made a pit stop in the movie as the obnoxiously drunk wife of Dennit Jr. Her bits made for some very funny moments, but were unattached to the rest of the action.

Although SNL ties have their benefits, it seems that Ferrell’s SNL background created a peculiar problem for him. It seems as though he is too aware of his audience’s presence and always seems to be pausing for laughter. When that moment passes in silence, it can be quite embarrassing.

Talladega Nights has some good, side-splitting gags, but mostly it passes in awkward silence.
