It was a chilly day in Middle Tennessee, but the engines and race track were hot as the NASCAR Busch Series rolled through the Nashville Superspeedway on Saturday, April 7, for the Pepsi 300.
The roar of 35,000 screaming horsepower filled the air and shook the ground and grandstands.
While the Busch Series does not have as many big names as the Nextel Cup, they race just as hard and are just as competitive.
Carl Edwards continued his early 2007 season dominance by winning the Pepsi 300 and taking home his third commemorative Gibson Les Paul.
Watch all the racing you want on TV but nothing compares to seeing it in person. The smell of burned rubber and spilled fuel gives the experience something way beyond what a TV can offer. Sure seeing a wreck on TV is often exhilarating, but when it happens right in front of you it can make you swallow your tongue.
A lot of people say NASCAR is just a bunch of cars driving in a circle and they don’t want to watch that over and over. Well, these cars are running 150 to 200 miles an hour at about 960 horsepower for up to 500 straight miles.
The conditioning and discipline of the drivers, the building of a car that can handle that sort of pressure and the support of the pit crew make this a sport requiring a great deal of skill and knowledge. I would compare NASCAR to driving 120 miles an hour on the interstate in the rain while stopping three times to fill up in 14 seconds to cover a 500-mile trip.
And think about it, have you ever driven 500 miles without stopping to use the bathroom?
The Nashville Super Speedway, a massive stretch of concrete track just 20 miles from Murfreesboro, hosts four major events a year: two Busch Series races?the next being the Federated Auto Parts 300 on June 9?a Craftsman’s Truck Series race, and an Indy car race.
