Cabin, I Was Here (EP)

Rating: 5 Pulses

Boasting a predominantly modern adult alternative feel, Cabin has revealed their latest efforts of thematic songwriting and trance-like rhythms with their latest E.P., I Was Here, with Machine Records.

Playing consistently throughout the Southeast, including a recent stop in Murfreesboro, the Louisville, Ky. based Cabin has managed to combine brilliant, dynamic sound with lyrics that not only are stimulating and provocative, but deliver a pleasant sense of rhythmic meter.

This intricate mesh of alternative folk rock provides the listener with an ethereal, hypnotic sound with nuances of vibrant varied tones. With a broad base of musical influences, Cabin takes on a sound all their own, reminiscent of the late-’80s/early ’90s British pop sound like The Ocean Blue and Billy Bragg (with a hint of ’90s Colorado indie band The Samples) to the modern sounds of My Morning Jacket, Blue Merle and Coldplay.

Noah Hewitt-Ball’s smooth, ethereal vocals are compelling as he weaves the epic stories of past anguish and nostalgic memories, making the lyrics twist and turn in your mind as you take in the emotional, heartfelt melodies. Billy Lease’s guitar playing is very sublime and provides precise and delicate rhythm, similar to David Gavurin of The Sundays or the rhythmic, melodic style of Johnny Marr during his time with The Smiths.

David Chale’s drumming fills a much-needed role in this cohesive unit, showing superb technique to keep the timing perfect to help convey the emotional intensity of each song. The exquisite technique of Sarah Weider’s violin, cello and keyboard playing provides the final link to the band’s atmospheric formula, placing lingering notes upon the music, adding a beautiful dimension to the evocative sound.

Much of the material blends together in a crafty, unique style, binding together fragments of country-blues, overlaying pop melodies, and a distinct progressive folk sound. Songs such as “Dance With Me” detail the essence of awkward youth trying to catch a hold of a sweet moment that could provide a memory for a lifetime while “Cover Your Eyes” examines the disillusionment of lost hopes and stubborn fears while pursuing the age-old goal of happiness. These songs are epic in nature, providing an outlook on man’s journey of self through humiliation and confession. The overall feeling of the album is almost euphoric as the music breaks downward and upwards, providing the plea for the listener to hold on to what matters most in their lives despite the horrific efforts of society to keep their emotions quelled. The tempo is delicately driven and precise in each song, creating strong transitions to keep the varying pace of the album. While exploring the depths of their thematic lyrical sense, Cabin does not compromise its musical quality, bringing together finely written lyrics with perfect melody.

Cabin’s I Was Here is a deep, sincere, and enlightening look at our trials in life, and it commands such strong emotion, leading the way with words of hope and wisdom. Cabin has brought together a clear, focused album that has equal lyrical and musical strength.

Cabin’s songs remind you that it is not what lies at the end of the journey that is important, but it is the journey itself. Just go with it.
