Feng Shui: Declutter, Balance and Harmonize

A New Year always brings out the best intentions. I have started clearing out closets and a goal is to clean up my home office.

More and more people are working at home, which has its good and bad points. It is great sleeping in and having no sort of dress code and even being able to run errands whenever you want. The downside is maintaining an organized work space and juggling work, paying bills, and doing household chores.

Instead of hiring a professional organizer, you might want to consider implementing some fundamentals of Feng Shui (pronounced Fung Schway).

Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of harmonizing both your inner and outer space. Feng Shui has been defined as the “Art of Placement” or the relation to chi, the subtle flow of energy that flows through the land and affects our environment. It is like “luck engineering.” For the ancient Chinese, luck was not chance but opportunity. Feng Shui is for those who wish to grasp opportunity.

By including the key elements of fire, water, earth, metal and wood, you will have a work space that maximizes your productivity level while nurturing a calm and soothing balance, thus creating harmony.

Furniture

1. Don’t obstruct the doorway. Keeping the entrance way clear will allow positive energy or chi to flow freely in and out of the room.

2. Make sure your furniture represents the elements. You won’t have a desk made of fire so try to use metal or wood elements.

3. Move the TV to another room. A television in your home office will be a constant distraction.

4. Don’t lose sight of the door. All your chairs and sofas should be situated so that anyone sitting in your office will always be able to see who comes into your office.

5. Don’t overcrowd a room. Overcrowding leads to tense and nervous energy.

6. Leave at least 3 feet between furniture.

7. Be comfortable. Being comfortable will keep your mind off your external circumstances and will allow you to focus on work.

Eliminate Clutter

1. File Papers.

2. Organize your desk.

3. Don’t use your workspace for any other chores.

4. Separate your mail.

5. Bring in as little food as possible

6. Use a bookshelf for books and manuals you refer to frequently.

7. Clean up before ending each workday.

Decorations

1. Flowers and plants introduce life, which will boost your spirits and help balance the elements. Plants and flowers represent wood. Make sure you take care of your plants. Dying or dead plants increase the amount of negative energy in your space.

2. Paintings are positive additions to your home office. Choose ones that keep you in touch with the environment such as landscapes and natural designs. Keep wall decorations at eye level.

3. Avoid sharp-cornered objects which are not only potentially harmful but are believed to obstruct the pathway of chi/energy. Most desks have sharp corners. However, as long as you are not sitting directly at the point, chi will still flow around you easily.

4. Having a small water fountain is good for several reasons: the sound of running water will soothe your senses and the water element is introduced into your space.

5. If it does not have a function get rid of it.

Light

1. Have enough light sources for reading and relaxation. Natural light from a window is also important. Make sure your window has blinds or curtains in case there is too much sun.

2. Mirrors help positive energy dart around a room. Hang a mirror over your computer to watch the wall behind you and open up the space.

Color

1. Reds are thought to introduce feelings of wealth and happiness.

2. Blues includes the association of the element of water. Blue gives soothing energy and can promote productivity.

3. Green is considered to be a color of growth, freshness and peace.

4. Earth tones in soothing shades of brown, yellow and green generally make people feel at ease and comfortable because of their relationship to the earth.

5. Metallic accents will brighten up your office in a subtle way.

Sound

1. Play soothing music throughout the day to keep you relaxed and alleviate stress.

2. Pick a room located far away from loud noises.

3. Eliminate distraction by closing your door.

Scent

1. Remove garbage.

2. Light candles. Candles represent the fire element and also help people feel cozy.

3. Citrus scents increase energy in a room and keep you alert and awake.

4. Lavender and geranium calm nerves.

These Feng Shui suggestions are just a few things one can do to make a home office pleasing, comfortable and efficient. These suggestions can also be applied to other parts of a home. Feng Shui is not only an art but encourages practicality as well.

The most powerful change you can make in your environment is decluttering. Take a look at things in your surroundings. Ask yourself these simple questions:

* Do I need it?

* Do I use it?

* Do I love it?

* Does it give me joy?

* If I lost it, would I want to replace it?

When you release unnecessary and unwanted things from your life, you are making way for new energy, which can lead to new opportunities.

Wishing you a decluttered, balanced and harmonious 2008.
