YMCA Gets Set To Play Ball

The Rutherford County Family YMCA is set to host its fifth Annual Corporate Dodgeball Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 13.

Tournament proceeds will support YMCA youth sports, summer and afterschool programs and provide financial assistance to families in the area that could not afford memberships otherwise, according to Chairperson Chad Hill.

However, perhaps the most noteworthy aspect of this year’s friendly competition is the first-ever military match featuring members of the Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines in a separate bracket. The winner of this bracket will receive the Godwin-Golczynski Memorial Cup, which was created to honor Larry Godwin and Marc Golczynski, two men committed to serving their community and country.

Godwin passed away a couple of years ago as he was driving on I-840. After experiencing cardiac arrest while driving, he lost control of his vehicle resulting in a fatal, single-car accident.

Hill recalls Godwin supporting, sponsoring and playing in the first YMCA Dodgeball Tournament.

“He was a phenomenal, big-hearted guy,” he adds.

Teena Godwin, widow of Larry Godwin, also remembers her whole family playing in the first tournament.

“We really weren’t particularly good,” she admits as she laughs, “but we had such a great time.”

She continues, “Sometimes we tend to hold back on giving, but Larry was the kind of man who wanted to give so much.”

Kristina Godwin Everingham, daughter of Larry Godwin, serves on the dodgeball tournament planning committee, and it appears her father’s goodhearted nature is instilled in her. She is set to play in the tournament for her husband’s business, Everingham Solutions, which is also sponsoring the Air Force team.

The Godwin-Golczynski Memorial Cup is also dedicated to the memory of a local fallen soldier. After his first tour in Iraq, Marc Golczynski returned to Murfreesboro. Though Golczynski had an inactive military status, he, along with 70 other local inactive soldiers, voluntarily reenlisted for a second tour in Iraq. Unfortunately, Golczynski would never return home.

Henry Golczynski, Marc’s father, says, “Marc was a patriotic person, a dedicated Marine, and he died fighting for what he believed in. Marc would be proud to have his name associated with this organization. As a family we are proud that the YMCA would recognize and honor our son because both the Y and Marc did good things for our country.”

Hill became friends with Golczynski through their work for the Chamber of Commerce. He speaks highly of Golczynski’s personality, demeanor, attitude, and adds that “it’s an emotional story but one that so many can identify with.”

Both Godwin and Golczynski have dedicated so much of their lives to servitude, which Hill says is what the whole “essence” of the tournament and the memorial cup are all about.

Everingham says the planning committee strives to raise as much money as possible through entry fees for the corporate teams, getting sponsors and even hosting a silent auction.

Hill recalls initially getting inspired with the idea for the fundraising dodgeball tournament from the 2004 film Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.

“It’s funny how the silliest ideas can turn into the greatest ideas ever. Just look at the paperclip,” Hill concludes.

The YMCA Annual Corporate Dodgeball Tournament began five years ago with only 12 teams. This year 32 teams are scheduled to play, while other corporations actually remain on a waiting list.

So far the Y has raised $22,000 from this event for its programs and underprivileged families, says Hill.

According to YMCA of Middle Tennessee, its 30 centers reach 278,328 people, “one out of every six people in the 12-county area it serves.”
