Murfreesboro’s own Glossary returns to its hometown to take part in The Pulse’s monthly showcase series for an April 29 performance at the Blue Rooster?the first local show for the Southern pickers since a January show with Velcro Stars and The Features.

Glossary has its sixth album, described by bassist Bingham Barnes as “about 20 b.p.m. faster on average than any other record we’ve made,” Feral Fire, coming out later this year. And it has just wrapped up participating in a fourth South by Southwest, playing six shows in Austin during the music event.

The week included shows with Two Cow Garage and Grand Champeen, members performing with Richie Kirkpatrick and Van Campell (of Black Diamond Heavies) for a Ghostfinger set, seeing T-Model Ford playing air guitar with his cane, a mainly pedal steel show at “a sorta upscale wine market called Cissi’s” and a “True Blue Raider” party at Elizabeth Hansen’s.

“You would be surprised to discover how many people with a history in Murfreesboro live in Austin or are visiting Austin that week,” Barnes said.

“It’s about time we did a show together,” Barnes said.

The Pulse has also been inviting visual artists to the nights. On April 29, brother and sister duo Ben and Rachel Johnson will both have work on display, and husband and wife artists Jeff and Myka Bertrand will make the art in the side room a true family affair.

Last month the gentlemen of the Screemin’ Boweevils brought a touch of class to the Rooster. The freewheelin’ hillbillies got the crowd all riled up in a sloppy frenzy. Local duo Seafood Hotline opened up that night with some driving, distorted indie sounds. And John Judkins and Stevie Bailey, formerly of Christine, let the crowd know what they’re now up to as their current band, Laser Flames on the Great Big News, cranked it up proper.
