Fall Sports in Swing, Volleyball teams drops two in tourney, but remains strong.

The volleyball team split its four matches last weekend as it hosted the Blue Raider Bash. MTSU won its first two matches and fell in the final pair of matches.
On Sept. 4, the Blue Raiders knocked off Georgia Tech, three games to one. Junior Izabela Kozon converted the most kills with 19. The following day, MTSU defeated Northern Illinois, three games to zip. Sophomore Stacy Oladinni scored 13 kills in the win. That evening, the Blue Raiders lost to Northern Iowa, three games to none. Kozon again led the way with 12 kills. MTSU finished up the Bash on Sept. 6 with a 3-0 loss to Ohio. Kozon had nine kills.
This past weekend, the Blue Raiders (5-2) headed to Miami for the Florida International Tournament. Last Friday, they took on Albany and Miami (Fla.). The next day they faced No. 22 ranked Florida State.

That same weekend, the Blue Raider women’s soccer team competed in a couple of home matches. On Sept. 4, MTSU tied Oklahoma 2-2 after double overtime. Freshman Paige Goeglein and senior Jen Threlkeld scored the Blue Raiders’ goals. With only less than a minute left in the contest, the Sooners tied the score, but neither team was able put the ball in the back of the net during extra time.
A couple of days later, the Blue Raiders only needed one goal from last season’s Sun Belt Freshman of the Year, sophomore Shan Jones, to beat Belmont 1-0.
On Sept. 13, MTSU (4-1-1) headed to Evansville for its next match.

Speaking of Belmont, the Blue Raider cross-country team began the 2009 season Sept. 4 at Percy Warner Park for the Belmont Invitational. Junior Festus Chemaoi took the top spot in the 5,000-meter men’s event, while senior Zamzam Sangau finished runner-up in the women’s 4,000-meter race.
Last Friday, MTSU competed in the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga opener. Results will be in the next issue.
