Paying Tribute to Dimebag

Dimebag Darrell, 1966-2004

Dimebag Darrell, 1966-2004

The first weekend of December is one that holds tradition for many families. While some use the time for holiday shopping and putting up decorations, one family puts on an annual showcase to remember to celebrate the life of one of the most influential guitarists to ever step onto the metal scene.

Friends, fans and admirers remember fallen guitar player “Dimebag” Darrell Abbot, best known for his work in Pantera, every December in a showcase brought on by local band 44 Vegas. Members of 44 Vegas have put together the showcase the past five years, which is how long it has been since the musician was tragically shot while performing on Dec. 8, 2004.

“We have friends that knew him and we were all shocked and affected by his death,” said 44 Vegas guitar player Eric Spjut. “He died doing what he loved to do and we want to honor his memory.”

This year’s showcase will feature 44 Vegas, Hybris, Love’s Tragedy and Retalitory at the brand new venue Groove Shack at Club Emporium.

The show will consist of each band playing their original sets, plus covers of Pantera and Damageplan songs in Dimebag’s honor. The crowd should expect some classic throwbacks to “Walk,” “Cemetary Gates” and “Cowboys from Hell.”

Proceeds from previous tribute shows have gone to the charity Little Kids Rock, a program that offers music lessons to public school kids who no longer have music classes due to budget cuts.

“Our singer has been a part of the Dime tributes and donating to this charity since the shows began,” said Spjut.

The annual winter show is about celebrating the life of a guitar icon, rather than it being a mournful event. Whether you were a Pantera fan or not, Dimebag Darrell became the face of metal solos and earth shattering riffs. His work will not be soon forgotten.

“Even though we didn’t know him, our band felt like we had lost a brother when Darrell died,” said 44 Vegas drummer Nathan Lux. “He was a huge influence on the music that I play and listen to.”

The band is equally excited to be playing at the brand new Groove Shack on the corner of Walnut and West Main.

“We have played in every venue around town it feels like, and this is new for the city and new for 44 Vegas,” said Lux.

Anyone that is a fan of rock music, having a good time with fun people, and checking out a new venue in town should be a part of the 5th annual Dimebag Darrell Tribute Showcase. For those who sport a beard, dye it red in Darrell’s honor and come celebrate the life and accomplishments of a real guitar hero.

The show will be on Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Groove Shack in Club Emporium. The show is 21 and up with an $8 cover. Doors open at 8 p.m. with music starting around 9. For more information, contact the Groove Shack at 615-896-8410 or visit myspace.com/44vegas.
