Going to College at Your Computer

With today’s economy, going to college can be more important now than ever. Distance learning is an excellent solution and seems to be taking the world by storm. Online program enrollments are spreading virally; this is mostly due to the access of technology. This type of learning erases all geographical and time barriers. Just like any other product or service, online degrees fit a specific need to those that are completing them.

These days a lot of folks do not have the normal 9-to-5 job. This along with economic indicators such as higher gas prices and unemployment has created an even more competitive job market. No wonder the distance education programs have had substantial enrollments over brick-and-mortar institutions. A 2008 study showed over 3 million students were taking at least one class with distance learning, this is said to have anywhere between a 9.5 to 12 percent increase over previous years. This by far shadows the mere 1.2 to 1.5 percent increase for overall growth in the higher education student population.

With all of this growth you have to be thinking if all of these students who are completing degrees online, how is the acceptance for online programs in the business world, right? Well concerns do exist, but acceptance is on the rise. Some concern could be due to the quality of education received by an online student. To address this concern a special forum was held in October at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to discuss and reach a standard in the online learning community. Although there are concerns, most corporations will hire with online degrees as long as the school is accredited. With increased online demand in education, the realization of a standard level of acceptance in program quality must be reached so an increase in confidence can continue to overcome social barriers of online learning.

Some other concerns seem to be due to problems with online diploma mills and online schools that lack accreditation. Diploma mills are organizations that award a degree based off of vague life experience; typically all you do is submit a resume and a fee. They claim to hold an accreditation, but the accrediting bodies are not recognized nor are they approved. Some diploma mills will set up accrediting bodies themselves to support their claims of this standard. The degrees just simply are not worth the paper they are printed on.

When you are being faced with the decision of which online institution to enroll, research the accrediting body for which they are approved. You can do this by accessing the Department of Education website to ensure they are recognized by the Secretary of Education; if you are unsure and do not want to put in the work of research, simply enroll into a program that is nationally recognized.

At the University of Phoenix, most of the online students enrolled are working adults; combined with a company’s tuition reimbursement it adds value in completion of such a program. Combining work experience, motivation and the discipline required to complete an online degree, it can very well be attractive to a hiring manager. The CIA cites 5 to 10 percent of its employees have completed some, if not all of their education online.

So, it’s pretty simple. If you know you are ready to be a college student and know you are not ready for a brick-and-mortar institution, the online option could be a great start for you. If you are a working adult or even a single mother and do not have neither the time nor the resources to travel back and forth to a traditional college, online could be a great option for you. Do not let the whole “will I get a job” voodoo get between you and your decision from gaining an education, online degrees are by far widely accepted and are gaining popularity.

Keep in mind hiring managers are getting more comfortable with those educated online and looking for those who can prove themselves and set themselves apart from the pack; online degrees can very well do this due to the discipline required. Just stay away from diploma mills, and ensure the institution carries either a national or regional accreditation.
