Monthly Science Discussions
Is chocolate really addictive? How much sleep is too much? How do they know that one particular Rembrandt painting is a fake? Why are some people such picky eaters? These questions and more are just a handful of the inquiries Nashville Public Television invites you to discuss with its new NPT ScienceNOW meet-ups in Murfreesboro, informal monthly gatherings and conversations led by a leading local specialist about current science topics.

The gatherings are free and open to everyone and will take place in two casual settings: the main branch of the Linebaugh Library at noon, the first Tuesday of each month, and Five Senses Restaurant at 6:00 p.m., the third Monday of each month.

“It’s about exchanging points of views and appreciating differences,” says NPT outreach coordinator Kathy Edson. “It’s about learning and sharing science for all, in a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere for adults.”

Scheduled topics include “Chocolate” (February), “Flu Pandemic” (March), “Bioethics (April) and “The Tenth Planet” (May).

Salons will often be enhanced with clips from NPT’s popular PBS show, NOVA ScienceNOW.

The main branch of the Linebaugh Library is located at 105 W. Vine St. in Murfreesboro, (615) 893-4131. Five Senses is located at 1602 W. Northfield Blvd. in Murfreesboro, (615) 867-4155.

MTSU Rec Hosts SCUBA Trip
Once again MTSU’s Campus Recreation Center will host a SCUBA trip during Spring Break. This time our sights are set on beautiful Curacao, Netherlands Antilles, March 6-13. This is a great opportunity for members of the community to participate in an affordable trip, benefit from group rates and get real hands-on experience diving in the ocean.

Even if you are not currently certified in SCUBA, through a partnership with Cornerstone SCUBA, you can complete the required classes and then, on the first day of the trip, perform the required open-water dives to complete your certification in Curacao. Then you will be free to enjoy the rest of the dives during the remainder of the trip with the group.

“Curacao is well known for its beautiful diving locations,” said Ray Wiley, trip coordinator and Assistant Director of MTSU Campus Recreation. “With 80-120 feet of visibility, and its abundant aquatic life, you are sure to see some of the most amazing underwater sights on the planet. The healthy reefs there are teeming with large schools of fish and seahorses, and the night dive is sure to amaze with the nocturnal creatures that come out to greet you: crab, lobster, and sea urchins just to name a few.”

The cost of the trip is $1,150 per person for students and $1,350 for all guests. This price includes resort accommodations, two meals per day, five days of two-tank boat dives, one night dive, unlimited shore diving, tanks and weights, reef and chamber fees and exit taxes.

For more information, call Ray Wiley at (615) 898-5701.

Sing “Star Spangled” for the Sounds
The Nashville Sounds will hold tryouts for national anthem singers on Saturday, March 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at historic Greer Stadium in Nashville.
All individuals and groups interested in singing “The Star Spangled Banner” prior to a 2010 home game must audition on this date.

Anthem tryouts are available on a first-come, first-served basis and all interested parties will be required to sing a live, acapella version of the national anthem during the tryout.

For more information, call Buddy Yelton at (615) 690-HITS, ext. 124. The Sounds host 72 games at Greer Stadium in 2010, beginning Friday, April 16.

Tuesdays are for Teens at the Library
Linebaugh Public Library now has something for teens every week! Teen Tuesdays are from 4:30-6:30 p.m. and will involve a different activity each week, from video game tournaments to book clubs to crafts and knitting projects.

“We’re looking for more ways to get 12-18-year-olds into the library,” said Youth Services Assistant Roy Lee. “Unfortunately, we don’t have a regular ‘teen area’ at Linebaugh. To remedy this, we’re trying to set aside some time every week where teens will feel like they have a home.”

With Teen Tuesday, Linebaugh hopes to attract more members to its Teen Advisory Board (TAB), a group of teens responsible for implementing teen events, getting the word out to schools and making suggestions for the Young Adult collection.

“We’ve made a lot of new friends and had some great times at our teen events,” says Kayla Anderson, president of the Linebaugh TAB. “Now, we don’t have to wait months to see each other, because there’s something fun to do together every week!”

Linebaugh Public Library is located at 105 W. Vine St. in Murfreesboro. The Library is the cornerstone of our community, enriching lives through free resources for learning, fun and opportunity. For more information, call 615-893-4131.

Reading Program Brings Authors to Speak
Local readers can earn prizes for the books they read this winter by participating in the Resolve to Read Winter Reading Program at Linebaugh Library. This year’s program features visits from authors and prizes, including gift cards to area restaurants and autographed books.

Every person who reads at least five books during the program will be awarded a small prize and will be eligible for the grand prize drawing on Feb. 23.

As part of the program, the library will host book talks with Sherrilyn Kenyon, author of the “Dark-Hunter” series, at 1 p.m. on Feb. 23; and J.T. Ellison, author of “Judas Kiss” and “All The Pretty Girls,” at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23.

Winter Reading Programs are also being held at the Eagleville and Smyrna Libraries.
