Die, Develkok, Die!

Die Develkok

Die, Develkok, Die!: That’s the provocative title of the new film by Murfreesboro director Mike Dobrzelecki, and it’s premiering Wednesday, May 15, at the Malco Roxy Cinema in Smyrna. Now, before the image of a demonically possessed phallus sends you running for the aisles, rest assured, the title Die, Develkok, Die! is a little misleading.

The film follows main character Terry Develkok (see, it’s just the name of the main character!), a man who discovers that he cannot die. Like an extreme version of Fight Club’s “I want you to hit me as hard as you can” scene, Terry dares his friend to try to kill him. Realizing that he is unkillable, Terry Develkok decides to use his powers for good, incurring the wrath of myriad macabre and motley miscreants who band together to stop the scourge against evil that is Terry Develkok, played by co-writer Chad Laha.

Dobrzelecki cites Walter Hill’s The Warriors as providing some inspiration to what he describes as less a horror movie than a gory superhero movie. Dobrzelecki not only co-wrote and directed Die, Develkok, Die! but also worked on the special make-up and gore effects, which he and cinematographer Cameron Bruce Chiles promise are almost entirely practical (i.e. no CGI!).

The premiere at the Malco Roxy will be the culmination of two years of hard work, and will likely be the only showing to have all major cast and crew in attendance with a short post-screening Q&A hosted, in the flesh, by Cringey of Culture Cringe. If you like farmers markets and exploitation flicks, then the new feature-length film straight outta Murfreesboro, Die, Develkok, Die!, is your chance to die, er, buy, local. Tickets will not be sold at the door, so here’s how to get ’em: go “like” the page facebook.com/develkok and buy some tickets (only 10 smackers!) or go to develkok.storenvy.com.
