Stage, Spirits and Spite: Ghost Brothers of Darkland County

Here I am: an Indiana girl going to see a play that one of Indiana’s favorite sons has brought to the stage. Never mind that master horrorist Stephen King and music legend T Bone Burnett were huge influences on a project 13 years in the making, I’m here for Mellencamp as I sink into my seat, wondering if the lyrics to “Pink Houses” are going to stick in my head.

Looking at a stage that is set just as dark as the story that’s about to unfold, the ambiance is like a sad, old radio show like one my mother probably grew up listening to when she was a little girl. It’s complete with the microphone up front and a semi-circle in the center for the cast to sit in during production. They enter together, with some of Mellencamp’s personal band from stage left, I think. Jesse Lenat, Zydeco Cowboy, is seated on a stool front left, dressed in white as he narrates our story. Playing a ditty on his guitar like an angel sitting on your soldier playing a harp, we get our first taste of Americana in a dark delicacy that reminds me why I’m here. My skin goes electric.

Ghost Brothers of Darkland County is a Southern Gothic story about brothers: brothers who grew up and grew apart, and along the way dark secrets are kept, and a dysfunctional family is formed. Our main character, Joe McCandless, is a father looking to avoid tragedy and a victim haunted by it in the same measure. But sometimes, to protect the ones you love from harm, you have to expose them to it. Even if it means reaching deep into your own closet and pulling out your skeletons to wear.

This was Stephen King’s first attempt at a theatrical production, and let me say that he nailed it. The music was exceptional, and only outshined by the cast. Bruce Greenwood, an actor who receives more familiar looks than praise, proved that he can handle the spotlight and lead the show. And while not one bad performance was given, Jake La Botz stole the show for me. He’s the devil sitting on our other shoulder, almost holding a magnet to the moral compass of the narrative with an outstanding performance that’s as delicious as it is unnerving. The production design, though not what you’ll anticipate, does fulfill its obligation in getting us there.

Speculating that Mellencamp himself had his own strained family relationships, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County leaves you with a feeling that you can’t rectify the past, but you can get there just in time to see the future. It also leaves us with an important question: “How can we let our best friends, the ones who we share all of our secrets with, become our worst enemies?”

At the risk of giving too much away, I don’t want to say anything else. But after the show ends, with the audience giving a standing ovation, we try to comprehend what we just saw. It’s a tale of love, lust, jealousy and revenge . . . but it’s also something more.

Ghost Brothers of Darkland County will be at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on Oct. 16. For more information, visit ghostbrothersofdarklandcounty.com. Also, the awesome soundtrack is available for purchase via iTunes.
