Murfreesboro Photographers Explore Rule of Thirds

Photo Connect Murfreesboro, a group that aims to bring together and inspire Murfreesboro-area photography enthusiasts, issues a monthly photo challenge to all who would like to participate.

Recently, the group announced a challenge focused on the “rule of thirds.”

Rule of thirds is a technique designed to help artists and photographers build drama and interest in a piece. The rule states that a piece should be divided into nine squares of equal size, with two horizontal lines intersecting two vertical lines, according to a photography lesson on study.com. Elements of the composition should take care to not cross the lines, and points of interest in the work should land near where two lines intersect, known as a crash point.

“The idea is that an off-center composition is more pleasing to the eye and looks more natural than one where the subject is placed right in the middle of the frame. It also encourages you to make creative use of negative space, the empty areas around your subject,” according to photographymad.com.

Previous Photo Connect Murfreesboro challenges have included freezing motion, macro photography, self-portraits, wildlife, street photography, leading lines, tight-crop, and marketing and product shots.

Photo Connect Murfreesboro holds meetings the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Technology Engagement Center, 306 Minerva Dr. All photographers and photo enthusiasts are welcome to participate in Photo Connect Murfreesboro challenges and meetings, whether professionals or hobbyists. This group is a tool to connect, teach, learn, exchange resources and, most importantly, promote photography in Murfreesboro, according to organizers.
