Gagflex: Evangelicals vs. the Environment

The argument of global warming is Satan’s attempt to redirect the church’s focus from evangelism to environmentalism.” So says the brilliant and highly esteemed Rev. Jerry Falwell.

If you’re not completely surprised by this ridiculous comment, then you’re probably already familiar with the ramblings of the unstable Reverend Falwell. It’s not my intention to give any sort of credibility to Falwell by writing about him, because taking him or anyone like him seriously is the first step to realizing that you’ve completely lost your mind.

But he should be the poster child to highlight this subgroup of people who are basically preaching self destruction because of political beliefs. Falwell writes on his website that global warming is an unproven theory that isn’t worth spending money to prevent. He goes on to blame major media outlets and other evangelicals for perpetuating this global warming hysteria, and calls it an issue for limousine liberals and Hollywood elitists.

Falwell has a link from his website to what is called “A Skeptic’s Guide to Debunking Global Warming Alarmism.” This so-called skeptic’s guide is filled with press releases and speeches that are designed to abdicate responsibility from our government, common citizens and major companies, and set the blame on the liberal media for hyping this phony theory.

The main idea they are pushing to combat the theory of global warming is the idea that historically there have been global warming and cooling trends. If that’s the case, and man isn’t to blame, that means we can get together with our big companies and have a massive pollution party. Yay, for corporate greed.

The purpose of Falwell having a voice within the issue of global warming is to combat another group of evangelicals lead by Pastor Rick Warren who’ve recently joined up with the Evangelical Climate Initiative. Pastor Warren sees the need to make this environmental cause, a moral issue. Even if global warming is fake, as Falwell says, promoting environmental protection seems like a sane and morally right thing to do. If you believe that God created the earth, then what’s more moral than protecting the gift that was given?

Falwell and other evangelical leaders such as James Dobson and Pat Robertson issued a statement to the National Association of Evangelicals last year asking them not to partake in the Evangelical Climate Initiative. This truly is a shame because according to salon.com, the NAE has a membership of about 30-million people.

According to these right wing evangelical puppets, the global initiative is taking attention away from important issues like abortion and protecting marriage. Do Falwell and Dobson believe that their followers are so single minded that if they started thinking about the environment then they couldn’t possibly think of anything else?

The answer is that they don’t care. They don’t care about the environment or most other ethical issues for that matter. Every word that spews from their mouths is just more effort to stroke their own egos and what’s at stake truly doesn’t matter to them as long as they can find a way to use the issue to support their vain intentions.
