Whenever you think of New Age music you usually think of something trippy, but this past Earth Day weekend Forrest York proved that New Age can be something far more than that. With nothing more than a guitar, a computer, and a big screen, York mesmerized not only our ears but also our eyes, proving that New Age alone can show a more beautiful side of the world that we sometimes fail to see in the ’Boro.
With images of outer space, underwater wildlife, rainforests and more, York blew away the handful of lucky viewers in The Alley. After the show I got a chance to sit down with the artist and get inside his head.
“I’ve been playing instrumental music since I was in high school and everybody always tells me that it sounds like movie soundtracks, it sounds like it would be the background to a movie. So I thought I should do that, I should put a big screen up and have stuff to look at and then kind of be a soundtrack to the scenery,” said the New Age genius.
“It’s funny, I’m playing a mixture of guitar and synthesizers so it’s a mixture of something that is natural with something that is synthetic, but to me it’s all the same, they’re all just our choices. And so I basically just get in there and fidget with what I’m doing until I like the way it sounds and it doesn’t really matter if I’m playing guitar or if I’m messing with the guitar synthesizer or if I’m messing with my synthesizers, I always wind up getting the same kind of spacey sounds.”
Though he has no upcoming shows scheduled, York is definitely a unique artist that you should look out for in the future. Check out some of his tunes at myspace.com/forrestyork.
