Overcoming Obstacles

To The Editor:
[In response to the man who took it upon himself to write for an apology for the CD review of MC Dan in Issue 19 of The Murfreesboro Pulse]

I am a person who’s spent a great deal of time working with both children and adults with both mental and physical disabilities. In my experience, these persons wish to be treated just as fairly as any other person, disability or not.
Ms. Sheffield’s review was just that, a review. Many CDs are reviewed all over the Nashville and Murfreesboro area everyday, some with rave comments, some not. I don’t believe Ms. Sheffield owes anyone an apology.
There shouldn’t have to be a disclaimer shrink wrapped around a CD indicating that the artist is autistic and therefore a reviewer should take it easy on him. (Especially when Mr. Dan makes political arguments.)
Getting bad reviews is all part of a musician’s journey and if MC Dan wishes to have a musical career, then there’s no reason why he shouldn’t take the same journey as others.
If anyone has any doubt that a person with mental disabilities can be successful in the music industry, then maybe he should take a look at the legacy that Wesley Willis left behind.
Oh, what’s that? You don’t know who that is? Maybe sir, you should do your homework.
