There is a multitude of prison break films to be seen. So many in fact, that the genre can become tiresome. Here are two which stand the test of multiple viewings and retain their greatness under any measure.
Cool Hand Luke is required viewing in many film classes, and for good reason.
The main character Luke is a non-conformist who defies authority and the establishment. Made in 1967, it could not have been more relevant. Paul Newman is at his best portraying Luke, who is an obvious Christ-like figure. The symbolism is plentiful, but smart as well. The movie is dramatic, funny, and sentimental.
Cool Hand Luke is a true all time classic.
Jim Jarmusch has directed many great movies, but Down By Law is his masterpiece. Jarmusch sets the tone with traveling shots of New Orleans and the Louisiana bayous. The movie is masterfully paced.
The film is also perfectly cast, while mostly focusing on the ensemble, which includes Tom Waits, John Lurie, Roberto Benigni and Nicoletta Braschi.
Down By Law has a unique brand of comedy not readily found elsewhere.
Jarmusch describes it as a “neo-beat-noir-comedy.” The film is shot in beautiful black and white, and is an absolute must see.
Until next time, I hope you have a great viewing experience. Comments are welcomed at cinespire@gmail.com.
