Gagflex: Journalistic vampires and the bridge to Obama

The fake news vampires stumbled for a moment after Democrats took the House and Senate, but they’ve found a new victim to sink their fangs of hate into.

Barack Obama has yet to announce his presidential intentions, but that hasn’t stopped Fox News and other pundits from hitting him with all sorts of cheap shots.

Obama admitted to using cocaine when he was a teenager in his first book “Dreams From My Father.” The book was written in 1995, and has gone on to become a best seller. But don’t bother telling that to Fox News because they’ve apparently dug up a gem of information that’ll foil that do-gooder’s plans.

On Fox’s morning show “Fox and Friends,” co-host Steve Doocy implied that Obama somehow tried to bury the book because only 20,000 copies existed. If Doocy were a “reader,” there’s a good chance he would have managed to drift into a bookstore and come across Obama’s book, since there are over 800,000 copies currently in print.

Additionally, Obama recently talked openly about it on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” That should be the end of the story. He’s not going to turn into a Jekyll and Hyde-type character because he used some drugs when he was a teenager.

The vampires at Fox News aren’t the only ones guilty of not doing their homework. CNN and Yahoo News both recently mangled Obama’s name, calling him Osama. Misspelling his name is one thing, linking him with the world’s most wanted terrorist is a major act of idiocy. It’s a one letter foul up, but it’s a world of difference and damage to write that President Bush should just “F” himself opposed to President Bush should just “B” himself.

It’s rare I bother to defend a politician’s character. They usually have so many spin doctors we don’t even get a glimpse of who they are.

Obama is a different case. His latest book, “The Audacity of Hope,” is a clear insight to his social and political beliefs. It’s one of the best books I’ve ever read, possibly one of the best political books ever. And, as opposed to many crummy books by other politicians, he didn’t have a ghostwriter. Obama doesn’t mind us knowing who he and his family are.

The conservative pundits want to break him down because he’s an extremely popular Democrat. What they apparently aren’t getting is that he’s popular because he’s finding ways to nullify political division and cynicism. And if he can find ways to nullify Fox News and chop away American cynicism, including my own, then the guy is nothing short of a miracle worker.
