If you’re a big fan of Wii Sports then it’s likely that you’ll enjoy Nintendo’s newest mini-game-filled title, Wii Play.
Just like Wii Sports, Wii Play is another Wii Remote tech demo that Nintendo has decided to bundle with a Wii Remote. The game is filled with nine different mini-games, some which aren’t worth mentioning, but I will anyways. The mini-games include: Shooting Range, Find Mii, Table Tennis, Pose Mii, Laser Hockey, Billiards, Fishing, Charge! and Tanks!
Again, like Wii Sports, Wii Play allows players to use their Mii created characters saved on their Nintendo Wii console. One of the mini-games, Find Mii, instructs players to point out the Mii that they are playing with or to find two of the same Miis out of a huge crowd of Miis. This mini-game is pretty fun, at least for the first few times.
Pose Mii is another mini-game that uses the Mii created characters. Players are able to make their Miis strike different poses to match the responding pose in the bubbles. Once again, this mini-game is only fun for about 10 minutes, maybe even that.
The mini-game I enjoyed the most is the Duck Hunt-inspired, Shooting Range. You simply point at the TV screen with the Wii Remote and start firing at the different targets. There are a multiple of different rounds which include shooting at balloons or shooting at cans. You’ll also see a few ducks flying around allowing for some extra bonus points. The best part of this mini-game is getting a friend to play with to see who can get the high score.
The other mini-game that I enjoyed is Tanks!, which is the only mini-game that uses the Nunchak attachment. You control a tank and you’re mission is to destroy the other A.I. controlled tanks. There’s also a two player mode to see who can destroy more A.I. tanks than the other.
As for the other mini-games, I won’t go too much into them. Laser Hockey and Table Tennis are pretty much rip-offs of Pong. All you do is tap the Wii Remote to hit the ball back towards your opponent. In Fishing, players use the Wii Remote like a rod to try and catch the different types of fish. It feels awkward for a while, but you’ll get the hang of it. Charge! is probably the weirdest mini-game of them all. It’s a cow racing game where players hold the Wii Remote horizontally as if they were driving the cow. Yea, I know it sounds crazy, but it’s real. And last, but not least, is Billiards which shows signs of a promising game if someone really tried to make one.
Honestly, some of these mini-games are fun at first, but they get pretty boring after only a few times of playing. If you’re the type that doesn’t like real games, by which I mean games that actually take skill to play, then you’ll like Wii Play. The only reason I bought it was because it comes with a Wii Remote, which still seems to be incredibly difficult to find, except for on eBay.
I’ve come to my conclusion. Wii Play is a $10 game that comes with a $39.99 Wii Remote.
