Proceeds from collection go to Greenway statue
Maura White’s love of art and color began like most of us?at a very young age with coloring books and crayons. Unlike many, however, she grew up in an art-rich environment, surrounded by creativity and inspiration.
“My primary and secondary teachers were instrumental in encouraging and guiding the artist within to emerge,” said White. Those early supporters helped this wife and mother of four to continue her artistic activities, including ceramics, drawing, painting, writing and glass and textile work.
Once settled onto their organic farm in Middle Tennessee, Maura decided to throw herself into glasswork full time, and opened Southern Stained Glass, which includes of a gallery to showcase local artists’ work.
This passion for the arts contributed to White’s participation in the Murfreesboro Arts Journey as a Gallery Sponsor and to donate a work to Bags for the Boro.
“My piece is titled The Pullman,” she said, giving credit to her grandmother for the choice. “I always loved my grandmother’s small case that she used for makeup and overnight trips. When Bags for the Boro came up, I picked up a bag from committee chair Patricia Tenpenny, looked at it, and decided to build my own.”
White drew inspiration for the South Sea theme from stickers that were once a sign of a well-traveled bag.
The stained-glass bag and a variety of other Bags for the Boro created by local artists will be sold Friday, April 20, at a Silent Auction at the Murfreesboro Arts Journey Bon Voyage Party at Oaklands Historic House.
Funds raised from various activities during the event will go toward the creation of a sculpture titled Gateway to Murfreesboro for the Greenway Pedestrian Island.
Bags for the Boro will be on display until Friday at businesses throughout Murfreesboro, including the Linebaugh Public Library, Peddler Gifts & Interiors and locations around the Square, including Palace Barber Shop and the former Mid-South Sewing Center.
