Rating: 2 Pulses
After listening to Scarey Larry’s self-titled debut EP, I get the impression that even veterans of our vast musical landscape have become jaded as to what metal is supposed to do for people.
Scarey Larry is a new metal band comprised of four guys that have been in the music scene for quite some time. First, there’s Scarey Larry himself, who takes care of the lead vocals and rhythm guitars. Then you’ve got Dantes on the screaming leads. The rhythm section is Matt Robeck on Bass and Stephen Nolen on the skins.
I like the the premise for the first song “Stop War,” but it failed to motivate any great anti-war sentiment in myself, even though the band received some death threats, causing one member to have to change his phone number, for the lyrical content.
The other song on the EP that I felt worth mentioning was track five, “D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F.”
I personally believe that this song could stand a pretty good chance on the stoner rock circuit, but only it was produced by a legend like Dave Wyndorf of Monster Magnet.
Overall, the record’s production seemed like another album manufactured at the metal factory, with the vocals sounding like the bastard son of Bruce Dickinson and Sully Erna from Godsmack and the leads straight from a Black Label Society meeting.
All in all, the Scarey Larry EP falls short of grabbing me by the balls and shoving me headfirst into the pit.
However, I have not seen the band grace a stage and my hope is that these guys know how to perform and how to get a crowd moving and make some heads bang.
