Murfreesboro residents will have a new living option just off the downtown square if a plan by California based Majestic Development comes to fruition.
The six-story building at the corner of West Main and Front streets would potentially include 46 one and two bedroom condominiums, 8,850 square feet of retail space on the ground level and a three-level parking garage.
The Murfreesboro Planning Commission will host a public hearing at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at Murfreesboro City Hall, 111 W. Vine St., to discuss the project. The commission will decide whether to rezone the property at 315 W. Main St. from commercial (CBD) to residential (PUD) use. If the planners approve the rezoning, it will then go before the city council.
“The city council has the final say on the plans,” Margaret Ann Ely, a planner with the city of Murfreesboro, said. “Rezoning takes about three months. The city has to have enough time to inform the people concerned with the project about the plans.”
The developers are not yet sure how the retail space will be divided if the proposition passes and prices on the potential residential units have not been released.
Main Street: Murfreesboro/Rutherford County, a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming downtown Murfreesboro into the cultural, social, professional and retail center of community life in Rutherford County, held a neighborhood informational meeting Monday, Oct. 22, to discuss the proposal.
Representatives of Gresham, Smith and Partners, an architectural firm out of Nashville who have designed the project for Majestic, were on hand to discuss the plans with local property and business owners.
“Monday night’s meeting was a perfect example of how Main Street is trying to bring local business and people together,” said Main Street Director Richard Gabel. “We discussed ways we could make the new building keep the look and feel of downtown Murfreesboro.
“At the same time we want to set a high precedent for what other developers will do downtown.”
Gabel said response to the project is “about 99 percent positive” so far.
