Beware of the new guy. Here are just two examples of a fellow who craftily positions himself within another family’s proximity in order to fulfill his agenda. The old adage, ’wolf in sheep’s clothing’ comes to mind.
Night of the Hunter (1955) is a conglomeration of German Expressionism, stark realism, and hauntingly whimsical segments. Robert Mitchum delivers the most powerful performance of his career by playing a man who impersonates a traveling preacher. His knuckles are tattooed with the words love and hate. It is just one of the devices used to portray good and evil in this timeless classic.
This is Charles Laughton’s only contribution as a director, which makes it all the more reason to cherish.
In a Glass Cage (1985) is regarded in many circles as one the most disturbing films of all time. Spanish director, Agust’n Villaronga weaves a grand tale of revenge against a Nazi war criminal who is condemned to live the rest of his days in an iron lung.
The movie is extremely stark, being shot almost entirely in a nearly monochromatic blue. Although it is strange and disturbing, it is also very well executed. This makes it noteworthy, and worth recommending to you.
Until next time, I hope you have a great viewing experience. Comments are welcomed at cinespire@gmail.com.
