If you like the blues, stick with B.B King or Muddy Waters, because if you listen to Brad Dix you may find out you have wasted 59 seconds (if you could stand listening to even that much of it) of your life. Don’t get me wrong, the music on the self-titled album has a great bluesy feel, but for many, the vocals and lyrics may be hard to overlook.
Somebody please take this guy to a studio where his voice can be tweaked. He was terribly off pitch, and his voice was all over the place. On top of that, each of his songs sounds like it was sung by a different person. Apparently Dix was trying to change the mood using his voice (something a lot of artists do). However, for him it just doesn’t work.
There are a few songs like “No More” where he throws in an extra crunch, but as I say, don’t try to add extras if there isn’t any foundation to throw them on.
By listening to the first couple of songs on this CD you may get the misconception that Dix is a terrible lyricist, but if you can make it past song 2, “Sophia,” you’re good to go.
One good thing about the album is the music itself. If these tracks didn’t have words then Dix’s debut would be a top-of-the-line blues record. The fun and upbeat feel makes you want him to stop singing and just start playing.
