I once asked a girlfriend I was suspicious of if she was cheating on me. She laughed it off and said of course not. For the few months that I dated her she constantly spewed off-the-wall crazy lies like some old barfly, but I stuck around because as the song says, everybody plays the fool. But as it turned out she wasn’t completely lying; she wasn’t cheating on me, she was cheating on her fianc’ with me.
It takes something special to be able to lie like that. To look dead into the face of reality and deny it and to avoid any sense of moral obligation while doing so takes a special sort of liar.
I don’t necessarily believe the old adage that all politicians are liars, but quite a few are what I consider to be pathologically compulsive liars. When George H.W Bush said no new taxes then had to raise taxes he was lying, but I wouldn’t necessarily consider him a lunatic liar. Sometimes you have to adjust your actions to fit situations that go against your core philosophy; sometimes the pacifists have to roll up their sleeves and be prepared to bash face.
However, Hillary Clinton is a politician who I consider to be part of that special category of pathologically compulsive liars. A pathological liar is usually defined as a person who lies to get his or her way and a compulsive liar is a person who lies out of habit. Calling someone a liar is a fairly strong judgment, but considering her track record, I think it’s fitting. She seems willing to say and do anything to get the presidential nomination, and she repeats the same lies over and over. The lie about flying into Bosnia under sniper fire was recycled in various speeches, and she had even written about it. She claims that she ’misspoke,’ but how exactly do you ’misspeak’ while reading a prepared speech?
She claims she never supported NAFTA, and that she played a major role in the Irish peace process. She also told Sir Edmund Hillary to his face that her mother named her after him when he didn’t climb Mt. Everest until five years after she was born. People within the mainstream media usually don’t like to throw out abrasive words like ’lie’ when speaking of politicians, but you can put any passive spin on it that you want, it’s still just a lie.
And no matter how small and insignificant they try to make it, they’re still fairly grand on the scale of lies. Saying that you negotiated peace in Ireland when you had nothing to do with it is a whopper. I once had a guy I worked with tell me that he owned a Lamborghini and got into sword fights with his father. He was a liar and that’s a big lie, but I don’t put it on par with saying that you negotiated peace between two warring factions of a foreign country. I think Obama was incorrect when he called Clinton ’Bush-Cheney lite.’ Bush and Cheney know exactly when they’re lying.
