Murfreesboro music lovers looking for a Fight will be in luck Saturday, March 8, as The Music Stop hosts middle Tennessee’s first Folk Fight event.
The event, beginning at 6 p.m., is a collaborative show featuring alternative folk music from three bands and two solo acts, including Murfreesboro groups Famous Hulk and Freakish Owl Boy as well as Knoxville’s Centralia Massacre. The solo acts performing will be Broken at the Gates from Fayetteville and T-AK, also of Knoxville.
Folk Fight has Allen Haynes excited for a number of reasons. Haynes, owner of The Music Stop, has played host to live music before, but never quite like this, he said.
“We’ve done a lot of acoustic nights and we’ve even done some rock stuff,” Haynes said, “but I wanted to do something more on the folk side.”
Each of the acts offers an eclectic take on traditional folk music. For example, Centralia Massacre, the founders of Folk Fight, have described themselves as a combination of folk, punk, jazz and blues, whereas the Famous Hulk and Freakish Owl Boy members also emphasize the alternative nature of their music.
Meanwhile, F. Clemmons Hall, also known as Broken at the Gates, is a “dark folk” musician who incorporates themes of Southern fiction in his lyrics. And T-AK, the other solo artist on the bill, is an experimental producer and blues harp player who uses toy megaphones and detuned guitars in his sets.
“It’s going to be the most diverse night we’ve had at the store,” Haynes said. “If somebody’s into really intelligent, eclectic music, they’re going to hear it here.”
Perhaps more importantly, the concert offers underage music fans and performers an opportunity to experience a live show. Since Tennessee recently enacted a nonsmoking law, it’s become increasingly difficult for those under age 21 to catch a band in person. As a result, Haynes said he hopes that his store can fill a void in town as a venue that is accessible to all ages.
“Even prior to the law there wasn’t really a venue for someone under 18 to play. Now, there aren’t any places for people under 21,” Haynes said. “This is good for people that want a smoke-free, family-friendly environment.”
Centralia Massacre, Freakish Owl Boy and T-AK will also make a March 7 appearance on local radio airwaves when they are guests on WMTS 88.3 from noon to 2 p.m.
