It is rare to find a horror movie that transcends its natural organic confines. Genre rules are nobly loosened in these films to allow for the exploration of ethical considerations and higher ideals. Artistic content is high, but the body counts fulfill expectations as well.
Let The Right One In (2008) is a Swedish vampire movie directed by Tomas Alfredson. I could not resist seeing this in the theater, but the DVD will be released on March 10, 2009. Films of this magnitude always renew my faith in the art of cinema. Let The Right One In focuses on the bond of friendship made between two 12-year-olds. Humanity is examined through their acts of loyalty and trust. It is powerful, yet sweet in nature. Allow this one to grip you in its clutches; it is a must see.
28 Days Later (2002) is directed by Danny Boyle. Although it resembles a zombie movie, it might be more aptly categorized as an epidemic movie. The action is high as the characters fight to survive through unfathomable circumstances. Ethical considerations are made through this time of great upheaval. The choices in cinematography and editing add an effective sense of urgency.
28 Days Later is both poignant and brash. The film is also another fine example of art, crafted by a very capable director.
Until next time, I hope you have a great viewing experience. Comments are welcomed at cinespire@gmail.com.
