Being fictitious, these movies do not necessarily serve as cautionary tales about the dangers in pursuing the art of stand up comedy. Although, they do deliver in being wonderfully outlandish and wildly entertaining. Definitely watch for the uneasiness derived from the laughs you receive from their comic failings.
The Dark Backward (1991) is Adam Rifkin’s screenwriting debut, in which he also serves as director. Judd Nelson stars as the awkward comedian who cannot summon a laugh. Great performances are also delivered by Bill Paxton and James Caan.
Used sparingly for select films only, I will deem The Dark Backward as truly weird. This whacky film could also fall into the metamorphosis category. A word to the wise: your mom might not like it.
The King of Comedy (1983) is directed by Martin Scorsese and stars Robert DeNiro, Jerry Lewis and Sarah Bernhard. Following Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, Scorsese diverged into different territory with The King of Comedy. Although it still carries a great deal of dramatic punch, it also explores the realms of comedy and the surreal. It is easily my favorite for the post 1960s performance of Jerry Lewis and the performance of Sandra Bernhard’s life thus far.
Until next time, I hope you have a great viewing experience. Comments are welcomed at cinespire@gmail.com.
