On April 29 Bart Gordon won the “Fastest Member of Congress” award in the Capitol Challenge Charity race, running the 3-mile course in under 19 minutes despite high winds and rain.
Gordon’s victory marks the 20th consecutive year he has outpaced his congressional colleagues in the charity event.
After completing the race, Gordon said, “This is a great event, not only do I love running, but the fact that it raises money for a great cause is why I have continued to participate over the last 20 years.”
All money raised from entry fees for the 28th Annual Capital Challenge race will be donated to the District of Columbia’s Special Olympics. With more than 700 runners participating in the race, an estimated $17,000 will be donated this year.
Gordon retained the “Fastest Member of Congress” title by finishing the race in 18 minutes and 49 seconds, off from his record-setting best of 16:59 in 1995. The second fastest runner from the U.S. House was Congressman Aaron Schock (R-IL), who finished in 20 minutes and 2 seconds.
Gordon’s victory is all the more remarkable given that he is more than twice the age of Schock, who is 27 years old.
“After 20 races and 20 first place finishes, I can definitely say I enjoy the competition,” added Gordon.
For the fourth consecutive year, Gordon’s bipartisan five-person team, “Dash Gordon,” also finished first overall in the race.
