If theater is running slow in our community right now, do not tell that to the folks who run the Murfreesboro Little Theatre. The small, community (and the ONLY “community”) theater is running at full speed to give us theatergoers a continued spotlight of our own, with announcing its 2009-10 season, a chance to put on a show of your own, and a chance to direct, produce or star on the stage of the old log cabin.

Now when I mean “small,” they say it themselves . . . “Little” Theatre. But if you do attend the other theaters in and around the area, you quickly find out MLT is the only one that doesn’t get too big for it’s proverbial britches. And theatergoers appreciate that. With them it is “come one, come all.” It has good shows, fine directors and awesome acting, sound and lighting. I always look forward to its shows and I am sure everyone was lost when “Twilight of the Golds” had to be canceled last month.##m:[read more]##

Coming up at MLT in June is “Working,” beginning on June 12 and running through the 24th. More information will be in The Pulse’s June 11 issue. Being directed by Wayman Price, I am “working” with my impatience to see this show.

The heat of summer on July 10 begins “Daddy’s Dyin’, Who’s Got the Will?” being directed by George W. Manus Jr. and produced by Out Front Productions. This comedy will be another hit, by George!

Murfreesboro’s Center for the Arts begins “The Sound of Music” also on June 12, and is being directed by Mark Saltalamachia. Since the Center won’t provide The Pulse a press pass anymore, it is doubtful I will be seeing it to write a review. Where is Julie Andrews when you need her?

Roger Miller/William Hauptman’s “Big River” will be playing at the Center from July 31 through Aug. 16 and has yet to find a director. I wait to see who directs this show, as he or she will probably have to kneel and kiss a ring, as well as be interrogated by Dick Cheney.

“Man of Constant Sorrow” has auditions at The Arts Center of Cannon County on June 1 in Woodbury, and the playhouse puts on “First Baptist of Ivy Gap” June 5-20. Donald Fann directs this hilarious comedy, and it may be one I am willing to pay for, as the Arts Center, too, no longer will give The Pulse a press pass.

I am finding out it is okay to praise and glorify a stageplay, but God forbid you make a critical comment. This ain’t New York, folks!

Obviously prayer works. And lots of it works even better. I was thrilled to hear that Brian M. Booth, one of the area’s better actors, came through his surgery better than expected, is at home and is speaking. He and Sherry (Sunday) remain in my thoughts and prayers during his convalescing, and I hope yours as well.
