Ladies and gentleman, the Train Daddy had a column already prepared for this issue, but I completely changed the article in remembrance of the great Steve “Air” McNair.
One of the most exciting players I ever witnessed play the game on Sunday, was found dead in downtown Nashville at age 36, shot four times, on the day of America’s independence. The entire story hasn’t been released as of presstime, but many speculations are being rumored.
Steve McNair was a man among boys on the field and a leader to his teammates and his community. The man was a beast on the field, loved by players, loved by fans, spoke highly of by coaches and sports analysts. He was always at fundraisers, visiting hospitals, always in the spotlight as a good-hearted man who cared for others. Any news that comes out won’t change my opinion of the star quarterback who might have made some bad decisions. We were all born sinners; no one is perfect.
This man was a three-time pro bowler, shared an MVP award with Peyton Manning, and fell just one yard short of bringing his team from behind to win a Super Bowl. He is the greatest player to play for the Titans organization and he gave them 11 great years. You can just talk to former players like Eddie George, Derrick Mason, Frank Wycheck, Kevin Dyson, Keith Bullock and they all talk greatness of the man. We even heard from that thug punk Adam Pacman Jones who said he was the greatest player he had the honor to play with.
Rest in peace Steve, you are one of my all-time heroes on the field and your legacy will not be forgotten. I will tell my kids of a man among boys who was a rare breed of quarterback and played the game with heart and passion. Every Sunday he would come on the field with all kinds of injuries and still perform at a high level.
That’s all I got to say. Steve, you will be missed, and through football and the lives you touched, you will always be remembered.
Steve LeTreal McNair, 1973 – 2009
