Have you noticed those 4–6 storefront shopping plazas rising up all over town like spring flowers? Many of these spots are being occupied by small, privately owned restaurants that offer a personal touch on lunch.
Gyro Tabouli is one of these small restaurants and it specializes in Mediterranean cuisine. It is at 2706 Old Fort Pkwy., but it’s probably easier if I just tell you it’s in one of those plazas about a mile past I-24 heading away from town.
The owner and operator is Kamel Hanna. Kamel opened the store about two months ago. He worked for seven years at a restaurant owned by his uncle in Nashville, and after learning the business, he decided to break out on his own.
Though the popular Greek wrap is in the name, don’t think that is all Gyro Tabouli has to offer. The restaurant offers good lunch specials throughout the week. One can get the lunch special for about $6, tax included, or the everyday gyro value meal for about $7, which includes a gyro, a side and soft drink.
This isn’t just a Mediterranean fast food joint. Entrées such as kababs, hummus, grape leaves and falafel include rice, pita bread and your choice of salad for $7–9. You’d be hard pressed to spend more than $10 to get a filling, delicious meal. Perhaps you aren’t the adventurous eater and like to stick to the basics. Don’t fear because Gyro Tabouli has something to please you with its variety of mix-and-match items. If a simple chicken and side or maybe a classic Philly cheesesteak are more your speed, then Gyro Tabouli has you covered. Vegetarians are also taken care of with grilled veggie pitas or veggie burger falafels.
On my first visit I tried the gyro value meal. The meat was mild but juicy, and the crisp greens and cucumber really added to the flavor and texture. On my second visit I took Kamel’s advice and tried the Philly. It was full of flavor, but very greasy. The grilled onions, peppers and melted cheese made it possible to eat this sandwich without any type of topping such as mayo or ranch dressing.
The restaurant is not big. There is enough room for an ordering line and a couple of tables. It is bright and the menus are conveniently located on the sidewalls and over the grill. If you are unsure of what you want, then feel free to ask Kamel. He is very helpful and he works six days a week so he will most likely be there when you are.
For the health-conscious, a gyro might not be the best option. There is an ongoing debate about whether gyros are healthier than their burger or pizza competitors—Greek restaurant owners say that they are; burger and pizza restaurant owners say that they aren’t.
The only gripe about Gyro Tabouli is that the food can take some time to prepare. If you are used to the order-to-plate-in-a-minute type of place, you may get restless, as it took about five minutes for Kamel to prepare my food.
In all, it was a good experience with friendly and helpful service. The personal touch of dealing directly with the owner makes one feel valued as a customer and confident in the product. It was definitely worth the $7 and I’ll go back to experience more of the menu.
