The Murfreesboro Pulse’s monthly concert series at The Blue Rooster continues to bring a variety of bands to the venue who otherwise may have not had the opportunity to play on the Rooster stage.
The December installment kicked off with Marj! out of Nashville. This group of youngsters is pretty tight, with some bouncy bass and atmospheric guitar, but with some pretty harsh vocals sprinkled in.
Three-piece Dr. Asimov then took the stage. If you’ve ever wanted to see a group that features one bassist performing some talk box effects while the other bassist is rocking out on his four string as well, playing some distorted patterns and wearing a colorful mask in the vein of the Scarecrow, or Slipknot maybe . . ., then Dr. Asimov is your band.
The group, made up of bassists Andrew Currey and Asher Johnson and drummer Ben Johnson, explores the range of sounds that can come from the electric bass, from feedback to flange to fuzz; I love the tapping. I’ve never heard the instrument make all of the sounds of Dr. A.
Most Amazing Century of Science then closed the night out. Though the large lineup took a while to get situated, the setup intrigued me.
This group is actually really cool, and ranges from hi-hat and bass funkyness befitting a ’70s cop drama, to a metal passage befitting Ozzfest, to . . . clarinet solo??
Yep, the good people of Juan Prophet Organization must have planted the roots of clarinet rock in Murfreesboro, because it’s taking off.
Definitely looks for more from MACOS in the months to come.
This month, Jan. 27, the series shifts gears a bit for a more acoustic-themed night with Andy Metz, Treva Blomquist and Rachel Pearl.
Though the featured artists at the series play vastly different styles music from month to month, the one commonality is their desire to create art and to share it with an audience.
