Murfreesboro’s movie series, “Movies under the Stars,” is returning this summer for its 63rd year. This free and family-friendly function offers moviegoers a different G or PG rated movie, five nights a week, at various locations across Murfreesboro.
This tradition, started in 1947 by Hollis Harris, has grown to be a favorite event for the community during the summer. Although the movies are G and PG to keep it kid-friendly, adults enjoy the movie series as well.
“Adults like to come and watch the movies too,” Marlane Sewell, Special Events Programmer, said. “Families bring grandkids and sisters and brothers, even though they are adults.”
Ellen Ward, 23, has been living in Murfreesboro for five years. She has never been to the “Movies under the Stars” series but plans to go many times this summer.
“I haven’t heard of this before but I love movies,” Ward said. “And it’s free, so I will definitely be going this summer.”
The series runs from Monday, June 7, through Saturday, July 31.
Locations are different each day:
Monday night movies are shown at Old Fort Park, between Concession Stand 3 and the tennis courts.
Tuesday night movies are shown at the Cannonsburgh Village office.
Thursday night movies are shown at Siegel Neighborhood Park.
Friday night movies are shown at Mitchell Neilson Primary School, outside of the gym.
Saturday night movies are shown at Hopwood Elementary School.
The movies begin at 8:30 p.m.
The movie list will be released in May, and copies can be obtained several ways. A list can be e-mailed, faxed or mailed to interested parties by contacting the Parks and Recreation office. The number is 615-890-5333 and the e-mail address is recreation@murfreesboroTN.gov. Felicia Burney can also be contacted about the movie series at fburney@murfreesboroTN.gov. Call or e-mail for a copy of what movies will be showing, where they will be, the movie rating, a list of the actors and a synopsis of the movie for that day.
Although the weather can be tricky in the summer months in Middle Tennessee, Sewell cautions moviegoers to not get down about a few rain drops. Some locations are indoors, while others are hosted outside.
“Just because it’s raining on your side of town doesn’t mean it’s raining on ours,” Sewell said.
So rain or shine, pick up a copy of the movie list, grab some lawn chairs, towels and refreshments, and enjoy a free and fun summer activity for all ages.
I don’t understand why we have to request this information every year. Why can’t it just be posted on your website?
Just curious.
