Hold onto your seats. These real-life legends have transformed their prison stays into globally epic tales of ferocity. They have arguably created art forms in the manner that they bestow and receive abuse. This strange and compelling entertainment will certainly have you questioning whether you should actually be enjoying it. Their use of philosophy and method must surely help us to digest the otherwise indigestible.
Chopper (2000) is directed by the Australian filmmaker Andrew Dominik. Mark “Chopper” Read is played by Eric Bana, who masterfully nails his persona and mannerisms. The film gives us a glimpse into the mind and actions of Mark “Chopper” Read with an equal emphasis in color and style.
Aside from his outlandish deeds recreated on film, Mr. Read has also authored several books, including one for children, entitled, “Hooky the Cripple: The Grim Tale of a Hunchback Who Triumphs.”
Bronson (2008) is a fantastic art-house film directed by Nicolas Winding Refn about Michael Peterson, Britain’s most notorious prisoner. Peterson took on the fighting name Charles Bronson during a short stint of freedom, before being handily detained again. Bronson exploits the few opportunities allotted to him, as he has spent 28 out of his 34 prison years in solitary confinement. Tom Hardy portrays Bronson in a truly stage-worthy performance.
