Psychedelia, funk, blues—they may be vintage, but they are still very much alive.
Who knew that a band from the ‘Boro could prove it? Tennessee jazzy funk act Sky Hi’s two-track endeavor breaks down easily into two distinct parts. Track one is for makin’ sweet, sweet love; track two is for dancing it off.
Released in April of this year on G.E.D. Soul Records, only two songs make up Sweetie Pie 45, but it’s Marvin Gaye meets Parliament, plus the influence of a slew of other soulful pioneers who first nailed down a groove, from Duke Ellington to Dave Brubeck. The reeds and brass caress warbling keys, and smooth vocal stylings fluctuate across a mid-tempo haze of soul and soft jazz. That’s “Smoothie Pie,” and if you flip to the B-side, you’ll find the same sound carries into “Get Yourself Together,” only this time with more prominent traces of funk biting around the edges. The pace picks up and the gentle rhythm grows more erratic without breaking the fluidity of gently needling sax and horns, pattering drums and melodic keys. Hopefully this electric, old-school compilation was just a preview for more of the same from this nine-piece Murfreesboro band, bearing all the right colors of soul, funk, R&B and jazz.
All in all, Sky Hi has crafted a suave, smart and sunny first release that says romance and party all at once, and mimics a style found less commonly today.
THESE GUYS ARE AWESOME !!!!!!!!
