Halloween at Hollow Springs
The Farm at Hollow Springs offers a corn and hay maze, hay rides, jack-o-lanterns and farm-inspired games like hay hop, corn play, cowboy station and tire crawl.

Hours for The farm are Fridays from 5-9 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m.–9 p.m. and Sundays from 2–7 p.m. A variety of pumpkins, gourds and flowers will be available for purchase. Food is also available, but visitors are invited to bring picnics if they like. Wear comfortable shoes to make the most of your visit.

Hospital Has Moved to New Site
Middle Tennessee Medical Center has relocated to its new site on Medical Center Parkway near Thompson Lane.

The $267 million hospital is twice as large as the old campus and sits on 68 acres. The facility contains 10 operating rooms, 11 labor and delivery rooms and 40 emergency exam rooms.

MTMC has established an advisory board of local business and community leaders to advise on the best new uses for the current campus. The goal is to make sure that the campus will continue to benefit the entire community after MTMC moves to the new campus.

Fisher to Premiere New Film
Fresh from the success of his 2009 H. P. Lovecraft adaptation Beyond the Wall of Sleep, Murfreesboro filmmaker Nathan Fisher presents his newest film The Islandat a Tuesday, Oct. 26, premiere event at Nashville’s historic Belcourt Theatre at 10 p.m.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world of unknown time and place it tells the story of one man as his desire for human contact comes into direct conflict with his will to survive. By the standards of the world he inhabits, Tom resides in the lap of luxury, but when a young woman enters his world, he has to answer the question “What makes a life worth living?”.

Shot in Murfreesboro, The Island features an original soundtrack by local artists including Don Coyote, The Reverend Jim Elrod, Sweatervest , Jon Gower and Josh Tannehill.

Nathan Fisher is also the frontman for seminal Murfreesboro punk rock band Doctor Gonzo and the voice of the Nashville Rollergirls.

Read-A-Thon!
In celebration of Teen Read Week (Oct. 18-23), Linebaugh Library’s Teen Advisory Board is holding a Read-A-Thon fundraiser. Teens will be reading all day long Oct. 23 in the library. Participants are asking for sponsors to make donations for each page they read. Donations will be used by TAB to fund snacks for teen events, supplies for workshops, promotional items, books for our book club, and prizes for contests.

Riding for Habitat
Motorcycle enthusiasts are invited to join a 110-mile ride and poker run Sunday, Oct. 17, to raise money and awareness for the need of affordable housing for low-income and hard working families in Rutherford County.

Leaving from the Habitat for Humanity ReStore located at 850 Mercury Blvd. in Murfreesboro, participants will travel the scenic back roads of Middle Tennessee to Lynchburg and back to Murfreesboro. Registration begins at 9 a.m. with the last bike out by 10 a.m. The run will end at the Lanes, Trains & Automobiles Entertainment Depot located at 450 Butler Drive. Last rider must check in by 2:30 p.m.

Good Time Charlie’s, located inside Lanes, Trains & Automobiles, will host live music from 2-5 p.m. and bowling lanes can be leased by the hour for an additional donation. Prizes will be awarded for the best hand, worst hand, and “you ain’t from around here” award.

MTSU Displays Craft Exhibition
MTSU’s Todd Art Gallery will host the Tennessee Association of Craft Artists (TACA) Biennial: The Best of Tennessee Craft Exhibition through Oct. 15.

The exhibit will feature 48 original works of fine craft in a variety of media created by artists from across Tennessee. Among those who will be exhibiting are Sylvia Hyman, Craig Nutt and Sherri Warner Hunter.

TACA has been producing the Biennial exhibition since 1966, one year after the organization was founded.

The craft exhibition is open to the public and free of charge. Gallery hours are 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. weekdays.

Showing Love to All Creatures
Holy Cross Episcopal Church will hold a Blessing of the Animals service on Saturday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m.

Each year near the Feast Day of St. Francis, Oct. 4, some churches give blessing to animals and pets in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures.

Great Clips Night for Kids
All 42 Middle Tennessee Great Clips locations will be offering free haircuts for adults and children on Oct. 13 from 5-9 p.m.

A suggested donation of $5 is asked, with all proceeds benefiting the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

There are six Great Clips locations in Murfreesboro, on Lascassas Pike, Old Fort Parkway, Church Street, Memorial Boulevard, Thompson Lane and Rutherford Boulevard.

Fighting Reading Disability
A Dyslexia Information Forum has been scheduled for parents, teachers and other interested individuals for Thursday, Oct. 14, from 6:25-8 p.m., on the second floor of the Linebaugh Public Library, 105 W. Vine St., Murfreesboro. A panel of local teachers and personnel from Murfreesboro City Schools and school psychologist, professors and staff from the MTSU Psychology Department and the Tennessee Center for the Study and Treatment of Dyslexia will provide information about dyslexia and respond to questions from the participants.

The Forum is in recognition of October being designated Dyslexia Awareness Month by the International Dyslexia Association, the State of Tennessee and other organizations.

Dyslexia is a reading disability that affects as many as 15 percent of the population. Using this rate, approximately 7,000 of the 46,200 students in the Rutherford County and Murfreesboro City school systems have some degree of dyslexia.
