Not Your Ordinary Salon

Beauty salons are known for their trendy stylists and ability to transform clients, but there’s one in particular that stands out from the rest.

When it comes to style, the ladies at Top of the Block know what they’re doing, and when it comes to supporting the community and local artists, they couldn’t be more savvy.

A locally owned and operated salon and spa, Top of the Block can be found near the intersection of Memorial Boulevard and Lokey Avenue in Murfreesboro.

Anybody who’s ever sat in a stylist’s chair knows that some of the therapy comes from the haircut itself, but most of it is derived from the conversation—chitchat about work, gossip about celebrities, upcoming events. The stylists at Top of the Block are accustomed to providing this type of “hair therapy,” and now they’re reaching beyond the building’s walls to help even more people.

With a desire to be active and fully involved in the community, the owners of Top of the Block have provided everything from haircuts for underprivileged children to a Wig Bank for breast cancer survivors.

Held in July, Hair Matters was an event that allowed the salon to give back to those who have supported the salon for so many years, according to Diane Jobman, manager and stylist at Top of the Block. She explained how haircuts, as simple as they may seem, can help people feel better about themselves—it’s a real confidence booster.

Top of the Block owner also offered space for a Wig Bank, a collection of wigs to help breast cancer survivors cope with hair loss and learn how to care for and style wigs.

Venture inside the salon to find walls decorated with artwork created by the hands of local residents. Not only is it visually appealing to clients, but it allows local artists space to display and sell their work, Jobman continued.

Top of the Block strives to be more than just a salon and spa, and by partnering with local organizations and artists, Jobman said the staff is able to truly give back, and artists are always welcome to utilize the space to show off their creations.
