Gilligan’s will never be the same after Nappy Roots came through on Jan. 21 with Wick-it and This is Art. That many people have not been recorded to walk through those doors since the name changed from 527 to what it is now. The high quality stage setup and premium sound impressed every one of the attendees of this show.
This is Art, a self taught bassist and producer out of Nashville, had an incredible opening set. He offered a unique and welcoming block of music by utilizing his bass guitar to play the deepest and richest bass undertones while getting down hard with live electronics to create a rich sound that is unlike any other.
It was also a pleasure to see the hailed dj, Wick-it The Instigator, especially after his huge EP release, the mash- up project with Big Boi of Outkast and The Black Keys entitled, The Brothers of Chico Dusty. He killed it, predictably. The energy just radiates from his fingers. You can tell he is so passionate about what he is doing, and he will only continue to grow. The club at that point was completely packed full of people from all over, and they all knew who he was. He played catchy, hard samples that made the audience get their blood pumping faster in preparation for the Nappy takeover that was about to ensue.
The crowd was very active, but it reached a whole different level once Nappy Roots walked out on stage. People went nuts. All the way back by the bar, girls were trying to get on guys’ shoulders just to be able to see over the sea of people. It was incredible; dancing, yelling, singing along with the famous, “Aww Nawws” that we all recognized. Everyone had an absolute blast, and since then, Gilligan’s has had a constant stream of people come through to check out what is next.
What is next, you ask? All kinds of events, drink specials and an incredible lineup, including Afroman, Space Capone and many more worth checking out!
