When I first moved back to Murfreesboro last year, I was not sure what to expect. I had not lived here since I was in high school, and as far as I was concerned, there was nothing fun to do. There were no cool hang-out places. However, every day coming home from work, I would pass 3 Brothers Deli and Brewhouse and think, “Hmm, I wonder what that little place is.” After driving past 3 Brothers countless times, I finally stopped. I was immediately greeted with smiles, friendly personalities and delicious beer.
That is why I was so happy when I heard about the 3 Brothers Deli and Brewhouse Beer Garden opening next to the restaurant in September. Finally, an outside bar and grill! I sat down with owner Eric Fortney, 34 year-old Ohio native and co-owner with his brother, Rob, of Buckeye Brothers, to find out more about this new venue.
“It should be the first outdoor venue in Murfreesboro,” Fortney claimed. “There will be a full bar outside and a set schedule weekly.” The outdoor bar, set in the grassy area to the left of 3 Brothers Deli and Brewhouse, will host clients on a daily basis, special events such as weddings and art shows and of course, music.
“It will be mostly show based,” Fortney says. “As far as what I am known for right now, [the music here] seems to be a lot of local, rock, younger stuff. I kind of want to branch away and draw a little more here so that we are not so focused on that specific genre. I hope to increase the level of music in here.”
As I agree with Fortney, the outside bar should bring more local events and something new to Murfreesboro, we watch the workers outside expand the 12′ x 16′ event stage.
“Ultimately, this opens the Square up to something it has never seen before,” Fortney says. “Outside of Mexican restaurants, you do not really see a lot of outdoor patios. In places like Memphis and California, they all have outdoor patios, and we do not have that here. Hopefully I can fill that gap. We are always looking for opportunities to expand. It is about finding the right location and the right people involved to move forward.”
After having this idea for about a year and a half, Fortney and his team are finally making this dream come true. As far as the law goes, “The coding does not allow for [getting an extended beer permit for a branched-out property], so for it to go through, it was just a process like every governmental process; how do you make it actually happen? And now it happened,” says Fortney. “Not that there was a disapproval, it was just figuring out how to maneuver the system the way it is set up. Actually [city council] was very helpful.”
Murfreesboro can look forward to this new-age thinking within the next couple of weeks, and we hope to see a schedule coming soon with some kick-butt bands and events.
“For such a small space we do a lot of stuff. We touch upon a lot of different demographics. It makes it fun,” Fortney says. “I do not know what this [garden] is going to do, but it has to do something!”
