Downtown Murfreesboro has been beautifully transformed with sparkling lights and colorfully decorated shops for the month-long holiday celebration. This year the festivities will culminate with the New Year’s Eve Night Watch Celebration—A Night with Music City Swing Band along with powerful Praise and Prayer for 2014” at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Murfreesboro.
This family-friendly New Year’s celebration will begin at 7 p.m. on New Year’s Eve at Murfreesboro’s oldest church. First Presbyterian Church is located within a couple of blocks of the Courthouse on the corner of College and Spring Streets.
As we approach the New Year with anticipation, the theme for this year’s Night Watch is simply “Joy.” A reflections praise concert will be held from 7-8 p.m. The warm, spirited sounds of the Music City Swing Band will follow, helping those in attendance to dance and swing their way into 2014 with fun and excitement. In addition, the evening will include leaders from the community offering prayers for 2014, ending with the ringing of the downtown chimes and church bells with a virtual New Year’s observed at 10 p.m. The 2013 Community Award recipient will also be announced during the evening.
The program goes beyond the fun of a New Year’s Eve celebration. Organizers are issuing a declaration of the plans of God for 2014 for this city. To say the least, 2013 has been a challenging year. Fearlessly and joyfully, we are posed to start a new year with hopeful anticipation.
The 2014 Night Watch celebration is a benefit for the long-term disaster relief efforts for the Philippines through the International Red Cross. Admission to Night Watch is free, but a love offering will be taken for this effort.
WHAT TO BRING:
• A love offering for the Red Cross
• Collections of canned and non-perishable food bank items and blankets, coats, hat and gloves for Greenhouse Ministries
• Your “leftover” Christmas cookies to share
• A flashlight for everyone in your family or group
• A bell or some other cheerful noisemakers
As all the church bells around the Square begin to ring and celebrate the arrival of 2014, organizers hope that others in the surrounding neighborhood will join in creating a sweeping celebration by coming out of their homes to ring bells, bang on a pot, or sound their car horn.
