Steber and Rorex Record to Wax at MTSU Center for Popular Music

Bill Steber, local musician and photographer, visited MTSU’s Center for Popular Music on Feb. 21 to cut a track, but not in the manner one would typically imagine.

Steber, who appeared on the cover of the November 2017 Pulse, recorded a song straight to wax cylinder. As shown in a post on Steber’s Facebook page, he and his Jake Leg Stompers bandmate Sam Rorex recorded a version of the Jimmie Rodgers classic “In the Jailhouse Now” with the help of Martin Fisher, the Curator of Recorded Media Collections at the Center for Popular Music.

The session was a resounding success, as the playback sounds like something straight out of the early 20th century. Check it out here.
