In honor of Valentine’s Day, be the love and light for someone healing from intimate partner violence or sexual abuse. Running throughout the entire month of February, the “Be the Love” campaign, presented by the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Center, allows for people in the community to donate a Valentine’s Day card, a single-stem rose or a bouquet of flowers to remind a survivor that they are being thought of and are worthy of love. A $14 donation provides a handmade “you are loved” card, a $35 donation provides a single-stem rose and a card, and $100 donation provides a bouquet of flowers and a card. Feb. 20 – Benefit for Van Hill
It’s time to give back to someone who is always giving to others. Van Hill was diagnosed with Stage 2 prostate cancer, and he has been undergoing expensive treatments. Feb. 25 – Community Cafe Day
Every fourth Thursday of the month, lunch is provided for The Journey Home at Community Cafe Day. The Journey Home is a daytime homeless mission that provides meals, clothing, showers and laundry. There are two crews, but you can sign up for either or both. The cooking and prepping crew works from 8:30–11 a.m. This crew, led by Ted Millsap, prepares the meal, sets the room and makes sure everything is in place to serve the nearly 100 guests. No skills are required as much can be learned. The serving crew is scheduled from 11 a.m.–1:30 p.m. Community Cafe is intentionally set up to provide a full-service meal for guests. Volunteers make plates, fill glasses and deliver food to the table. Cleaning the dining room and kitchen after the meal is part of this team’s responsibility. Throughout February – Rutherford Athena Scholarships
The Athena Scholarship is awarded to a Rutherford County woman who is at least five years out of high school and pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree later in life. The Rutherford Athena Scholarship, worth $3,000, is funded by the Athena Patrons Society to support and encourage women who want to grow personally and professionally. The 2020 Athena Patrons Society Scholarship was awarded to Karla Kirelawich, a graphic design major at MTSU. The scholarship recipients exemplify the Athena Leadership Model, which reflects women’s contributions to leadership: authentic self, relationships, giving back, collaboration, courageous acts, learning, fierce advocacy, and celebration and joy. March 3–6 – Precious Angels Consignment Sale
Get used items that are still in good condition at Middle Tennessee’s oldest and largest children’s sale, Precious Angels Consignment Sale, held at 630 Lehman St., Woodbury, March 3–6, from 10 a.m.–7 p.m. (March 6 from 8 a.m.–2 p.m., half-off sale day on most items). Items are gently used and priced considerably lower than retail. Selections include clothing, accessories, bikes, musical items, art, frames, pet care, games, toys, crafts and more. Though April 3 – Virtual MLK Exhibition
The Bradley Academy Museum and Cultural Center (511 Mercury Blvd.) has created a way to produce a student art show exhibited at Bradley Museum that showcases art inspired by the teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. MLK’s messaging was crucial to empowering individuals as well as strengthening communities, bridging barriers and creating solutions to the social problems around homelessness, unemployment, underemployment, food insecurities, violence, child abuse, prejudice and stereotypes. Witness a timeline and artwork throughout the showcase, which features the creativity and talent of the community’s artists. All ages are welcome; admission is free.
