Goodbye Roe: Life, Liberty, Bodily Autonomy, Women’s Rights and Science

The recent Supreme Court ruling on abortion has thrust that topic into the forefront of discourse in the U.S., bringing up some important issues of civil liberties, women’s rights and health that many stand so passionately for in their own way.

The U.S. government exists to protect civil liberties—life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

That series lists life first; life may perhaps be the most important civil liberty, the most important item that a worldly organization could protect and defend.

I have asked it before: How can one enjoy liberty if they are denied life?

But outlawing abortion erodes the rights of the poor, the disenfranchised, doesn’t it? Some say all of those poor mothers cannot financially afford to have children. We must protect the defenseless!

Well, in the case of abortion, if I am standing for the rights of the helpless, weak and disenfranchised, I will side with the baby in that deal, and do what I can to protect his or her life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. I see them as the group of Americans most in need of protection in this situation, not the rights of their mothers to choose to end someone else’s life.

“But, but . . . you’re against women’s rights!”

No, I am standing for women’s rights.

Did you know . . . ? Approximately half of those killed by abortion are female.

Opposing abortion is standing for women’s rights. Women’s health!

Refraining from killing preborn females prior to them ever seeing the light of day outside the womb is the healthy choice for those women.

Some medical professionals take the idea of “do no harm” seriously; others, then, must view the poisoning or dismemberment of a human in the womb as something other than “harm.”

Now, some are coming out of the woodwork defending the rights of the Satanists, stating that abortion is part of their religion, and we must not infringe upon the free exercise of their religion, right?

Well, I appreciate the honesty of the Satanists regarding their intentions to engage in human sacrifice, but no, if your Satanic baby-killing ritual conflicts with the protection of someone else’s life, sorry, you do not have freedom to practice that religion in the U.S.

Go elsewhere. Kill each other. I guess you want “innocent blood” for your ritual, but I say protect the innocent blood.

But what about bodily autonomy?!

Exactly! Bodily autonomy—the right for a person to govern what happens to their body without external influence or coercion—we must do all we can to protect the most defenseless and vulnerable from bodily harm and death.

The babies are not making their own decision to destroy their bodies. That’s coming from external influences.

Stand for bodily autonomy and oppose abortion! (And goodness gracious, there’s some inconsistent logic when you hit the pro-choice, “bodily autonomy” crowd with some support for bodily autonomy when it comes to mask mandates and forced vaccinations.)

Some who speak out so loudly about protecting our children from gun violence are the same ones advocating for legal violence against young humans in the abortion clinics.

Protect children against violence and oppose abortion!

“But it’s not a baby!” others will cry, “it’s simply a clump of cells hosted in the woman’s body.”

Well, let’s follow the science. Many pro-choice proponents should be familiar with this idea; weren’t many of these same people just screaming at others to “follow the science” about other matters recently?

MedlinePlus, a service of the National Institutes of Health, describes a sperm and an egg meeting in the fallopian tube. “When the single sperm enters the egg, conception occurs. The combined sperm and egg is called a zygote. The zygote contains all of the genetic information (DNA) needed to become a baby. Half the DNA comes from the mother’s egg and half from the father’s sperm.”

Okay, they won’t yet call it a “baby,” they call it a zygote, but the National Institutes of Health’s own literature recognizes that a new individual, one with unique DNA never before found in another human being, is created at the moment of conception; this from the great scientific bastion that is the NIH, a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services itself.

Further, from Van Nostrand’s Scientific Encyclopedia: “At the moment the sperm cell of the human male meets the ovum of the female and the union results in a fertilized ovum (zygote), a new life has begun.”

So stand for civil liberties, stand for bodily autonomy, stand for women’s rights, stand for the disenfranchised, stand for science and stand for banning abortion. Protect the life and liberty of innocent unborn American children.

I am glad I do not have to make a decision about abortion. I can’t imagine being in that situation. I just know that “pro-life” means more than just “pro birth”. I see all around me people who claim to be “pro life”, but refuse to support more money for helping those who have problems raising a child. We refuse in TN to expand medicaid, which would provide basic insurance for thousands upon thousands of our fellow Tennesseans ( and would help keep hospitals, especially rural ones, open). We cut monies for school breakfasts and lunches. We do not provide well for single family parents nor for those families who are well-below the poverty level. We do not have adequate housing for those who cannot afford decent housing. And on and on and on. So let’s don’t just stop with “birth”. Let’s move forward to increase taxes and provide all the bureaucracy necessary to fulfill all of these other needs that we have in our society to make sure that the one born has a real chance at “life”.

Great article, Bracken! You nailed all the points. And yes, the hypocrisy is strong with those who feel women should be able to choose to kill the living being inside of them, but NOT choose whether or not they have to wear a mask or get a medical treatment.
I do think people, especially followers of Jesus, have to step up and do a better job of taking care of the mothers and the orphans. I’m not sure how that should look, but I know it should be the church-not the government-stepping up.

Well said, Bracken. We need to stand up for the babies who have no voice.

Steve, yes, we don’t want anyone going hungry.

But as it is, a family of 3 in Tennessee can receive up to $535 per month in food stamps. If that is not adequate, many many organizations exist to make sure everyone is eating: Second Harvest, Feed America First, Journey Home, Nourish Food Bank.

There is no excuse for anyone in this community to go hungry. Either they or their parents are not utilizing the existing services available if so.

Increased taxes and more bureaucracy is a tough sell.

And yes, the health care machine and insurance situation is a mess that we all must deal with, but not a sufficient reason to abort a baby.

The state will pay for the baby’s delivery at the hospital if the parents can not afford it or do not have insurance.

Well said! I appreciate your logical, ethical stand. Abortion is, obviously, deadly for unborn babies, but it is also harmful for the mothers who chose it. It is a decision that will affect them every day for the rest of their lives. Women who’ve had abortions are much more likely to suffer from depression, substance abuse and suicide. They risk physical and emotional problems, sterility and, in some cases, death. It is in everyone’s best interest to choose life.
