Charity Chopped in the ’Boro to Benefit Habitat for Humanity, Amelia’s Closet, Second Harvest

Charity Chopped in the ’Boro is coming up Sept. 11 from 5–10 p.m. at Hop Springs in Murfreesboro, with the cooking competition beginning at 6 p.m.

“Charity Chopped in the ’Boro is a Chopped-style cooking competition that benefits local charities in Rutherford County,” event organizer Shannon Wheeler said. “We aim to close gaps in our community in food insecurity, employment insecurity and homelessness.

“Since this year’s event is on 9/11,” Wheeler continued, “this is also a great opportunity for our sponsors and guests to give tickets to veterans and first responders so they can come enjoy a good plate of food and a cold beer.”

Three chefs and their teams will face off in the cooking competition, Eric Ford from Goodness Gracious, Nashville-based chef Kerry Williams and returning champion Jason Matheson, owner of Primrose Table.

Each team of chefs will engage in the three-round competition that includes surprise ingredients from the executive chef, Laura Gossett, owner of Host Commissary Kitchen and Tasty Table.

The dishes will be judged and a winner will be announced. This year’s judges include former chef champions Five on Black owner Mitchell Murphy and Curious Kitchen owner Rachel Spensatelli. The third judge is the people’s judge Michael Zuidema, representing the Kiwanis Club of Rutherford County.

Michael Linn White will emcee the event and country singer Tori Lanelle will perform the national anthem. The Alibi Road Band will perform a mix of ’80s/’90s rock and country.

Proceeds from Charity Chopped in the ’Boro will be split equally and given to Rutherford County Area Habitat for Humanity, Amelia’s Closet and Second Harvest Food Bank.

Proceeds from a silent auction—for one big basket full of gift cards from local businesses—will benefit the Kiwanis Club of Rutherford County, which serves children in the area.

Tickets for Charity Chopped in the ’Boro are $30, which includes a plate of food from Tennessee Craft Butcher, beer from Cedar Glades Brews and a bag of kettle corn.
