Hellfire's Revenge

5 pulses

As the sound of paper flying off a heavy metal paper printer in Mammoth lead singer’s shop, here in Murfreesboro, “Here comes the hellfire . . .

Local staple and always-metal trio Aye Mammoth have released its next installment of doom-metal for the annals of Murfreesboro rock. Hellfire’s Revenge hearkens back to the Priest, Sabbath and Motorhead-inspired homage to metal structure and influence in the traditionalist sense that Aye Mammoth carries in long-haired, nodding fashion for the epochs.

As four of the heaviest offerings Aye Mammoth can muster for a 10th-year-anniversary recast of 2015’s Lightning and Hellfire, Hellfire’s Revenge pays tribute to the origins of the heavy metal, psychedelia, bluesy grunge and stoner metal as it revisits the sludgy heavy metal riffage and “desert rock” feel Lightning and Hellfire brought.

That 2015 release saw vocalist Micah Loyed touching on Layne Staley territory, in younger fashion. “Revelator” catches Mammoth metal at its country-roof, roadhouse-iest, almost Legendary Shack Shakers territory.

“Raise Horns” channels Angus Young taps before slow-temp taking a four-minute sludge harmony journey, drummer Phil Stem crashing glass through everything thrown. “Gravewalker” is just consistent sick riffs of a trio having some fun.

But the four tracks of Aye Mammoth’s 2025 EP, Hellfire’s Revenge, “Here Comes the Hellfire,” “Dread of the Deep,” “Starkiller” and “Deathless,” are absolutely some of the heaviest offerings throughout the history of Mammoths. Let’s all have some Aye Mammoth revisitation years. We deserve it.
