Jelly Roll Inducted into the Grand Ole Opry in Emotional Nashville Celebration

Jelly Roll’s induction night at the Grand Ole Opry was filled with gratitude and the story of redemption. For an artist who speaks openly about his troubled past, the moment represented more than a career milestone, it represented overcoming some of life’s biggest hurdles.

During a pre-show Q&A, Jelly Roll shared that two dreams once felt completely out of reach: singing on the Opry stage and seeing his name in his hometown newspaper in a positive light instead of in stories about his incarceration. With both of those dreams (and many more) now realized, “To be an Opry member and a Grammy winner is insane,” he said.

The country star also shared that before the show he took a detour through Antioch, his hometown, visiting places from his childhood.

“My loved ones aren’t proud of me because I ended up being a famous musician,” he said. “They’re proud of me because I stopped being a piece of s**t.” The remark drew laughter and applause, but it also highlighted the deeper theme that carried throughout the evening: transformation.

Before the main show began, a celebration recognized the songwriters behind three of Jelly Roll’s chart-topping songs: Ben Johnson, Ashley Gorley, Taylor Phillips, Zach Crowell, Blake Pendergrass, Shy Carter and Casey Brown.

Once the Opry show began, the lineup reflected the community of artists who have influenced and supported his journey.

Country singer Craig Morgan opened the night with a performance that held special meaning for the honoree. Jelly Roll has frequently credited Morgan’s music with helping him through difficult days while serving time in jail.

Later in the evening, Morgan returned to the stage to introduce Jelly Roll with heartfelt words. “He is one of the most loving and kind human beings I have ever met,” Morgan said, “and he cares much more about other people than he does about himself.”

Singer-songwriter ERNEST followed with a set of his own before being joined by country star Lainey Wilson for a duet of “Would If I Could” that energized the audience. ERNEST later returned to perform alongside the newly inducted Opry member himself.

The evening also featured a comedic interlude from Leanne Morgan, whose humor provided a lighthearted and relatable pause before the night’s emotional finale.

After intermission, Lainey Wilson returned to the Opry stage for a flawless performance of some of her most beloved songs, including “4X4XU” and “These Boots.”

Next, Jelly Roll stepped into the spotlight to thunderous applause.

“I heard a lot of voices tell me there was no way I was going to dig myself out of the holes I dug myself into,” he said. “But what I know is that any voice in my head that isn’t telling me I’m going to overcome isn’t the voice of God—that’s the voice of an absolute liar.” He then launched into his song “Liar.”

Later in the set, Jelly Roll surprised fans with a passionate performance of “Hard Fought Hallelujah,” a song that wasn’t originally on the set list. Throughout the performance he repeatedly gestured toward the necklace around his neck, Johnny Cash’s cross necklace. It had been given to him to wear for the evening by Cash’s son, who believed his father would have wanted Jelly Roll to wear it during the honor.

Jelly Roll also used the moment to highlight causes close to his heart, encouraging the audience to support Judge Dunkin’s Educational Center, which helps incarcerated individuals pursue education and build better futures.

When the time came for the official induction, Kelly Sutton, the Grand Ole Opry’s first female announcer, shared words about Jelly Roll’s character and artistry.

“Jelly Roll is an artist that pairs his deeply personal lyrics with music that has proven to be therapeutic and raw at the same time,” she said.

Next, Lainey Wilson delivered a heartfelt tribute. “Jelly Roll is a voice for people who feel like they don’t have one,” she said. “He turned pain into purpose, mistakes into music, and somehow managed to make millions of people feel like they were a little less alone.”

Then came the moment that made it official.

“Jelly Roll, because of your heart, your story, and the way you have used your voice to lift everybody up,” Wilson said, “it is my honor to welcome you into the Grand Ole Opry family.”

The two artists closed the ceremony together with a duet of “Save Me,” bringing the crowd to its feet and marking a milestone night in Jelly Roll’s remarkable and inspiring journey.
