Over the past year the proprietors of Grand Palace have provided the Murfreesboro music scene with a place to shop for records, beautiful show prints courtesy of their print shop, a recording studio and, from time to time, a venue for rock artists.

The Protomen helped the Church Street establishment ring in their new year Oct. 6.

The silver faces and silly antics of the 10-piece-or-so band provided a fun evening for an all-ages crowd.

The concert, or epic battle between good and evil depending on who you ask, began with the placement of a Mega Man-inspired helmet on the lead singer, which for functionality’s sake provided little more than ear-piercing feedback when a mic cord was plugged into an output on the back. However, the beautiful headpiece made the audience feel as if they were in the midst of a fierce Mega Man battle.

Out of the feedback, theatrics and video game-esque synthesized sounds some very effective, driving 4/4 rock ’n’ roll did emerge. But lest the audience think the show was about the music, a red-clad nemesis soon appeared out the window surely spelling doom for the crowd.
