The bride wore a simple white organza Oscar de la Renta gown, the groom a dark blue suit.
Jenna Bush’s first dance with her father, our nation’s president, was to Joe Cocker’s “You Are So Beautiful,” performed by Murfreesboro’s own Super T and his revue.
Also known as Tyrone Smith, Super T has been performing for 38 years, and is known across the country for performing at weddings, bar mitzvahs and frat parties. He first met the Bush family while he was making the wedding rounds in Texas.
First daughter and brand new bride Jenna Bush met Smith and his revue band at a friend’s wedding in Austin, Texas. Jenna was so impressed that her father invited Smith to perform at the twins’ White House holiday party in 2003, where he talked the president into doing the “Super T Booty Green” dance, and led a conga line through the White House after President Bush went to bed.
He must not have made the president too mad, because in 2005 Smith returned to Washington D.C. to perform at one of Bush’s inaugural events. Smith said he was “blown away” by his experiences in the capital.
On a local level, Super T performs regularly at Bluesboro in his signature costume, a blue superman-style outfit with a big red “T” on the front.
The kicker? Smith is more than 60 years old, but he still brings the funk with high-energy performances.
Apparently, in the presence of the first family, Smith toned down his wardrobe a bit. His signature trick of beginning his set in a tuxedo, then sneaking off midshow and returning in his slightly more conspicuous superhero get up, was nowhere to be seen.
However, his usual repertoire of revamped classics was present.
Super T performances range from James Brown’s “I Feel Good” to War”s “Low Rider.”
Other artists featured in his lineup include Chubby Checker, The Drifters, Earth Wind & Fire, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Rick James, Otis Redding, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, Isley Brothers, Baby Face, Peter Gabriel, The Platters, E.U. and Cameo.
“Most bands have a set list,” Smith said. “I read the audience. A lot of time, I don’t know what we’re going to do next. We just move right into it.”
He counts “Super Freak” and “Brick House” among his favorites to perform.
Super T performs at Bluesboro again June 28.
